Let's discuss the philosophy of rock.
I'm currently obsessed with Rush.
As a conversation starter, what's everyone's take on Spirit of the Radio? The lyrics in my signature are Turner-esque, in my opinion. Art and philosophy and everything beautiful is more important than a paycheck. Selling art is always a problem. I don't know if I could ever do it, but unfortunately, consumerism makes it difficult for your art to be seriously read or observed or heard, whatever, without being corrupted.
All I want to do is write, all I've ever wanted to do is write, since a ludicrously young age, but it's very difficult to be successful and not end up like another Stephen King or Anne Rice or something. I just want to write one great novel and die, so I don't have to ever burden anyone else with steadily declining bullshit prose.
Our Lady Peace held out for four albums, but there are some bands like U2 or Rush who transcend the music industry. I really wish OLP had tried harder to do the same. They were well on their way.

This has nothing to do with what you just said but I just wanted to say that Anne Rice is amazing .. she's one of my favorite authors and every book she's ever written (except for her 'erotica' stuff cuz I don't read those) has never failed to disappoint me .. her last book in the vampire series that came out last Christmas was amazing .. she's definitely not declining .. Stephen King is also a great writer.

I own Vapor Trails, which is a simply incredible album. I haven't really taken the time to check out some of their previous works yet. You'll rarely come across a bunch of guys as honest and talented as a Geddy, Alex and Neil, though I can name a few individuals.
I feel that you should persue the arts because you've got a passion for them, not because it's profitable. The reason most artist/musicans chose to persue the career is because they have an honest love for it (though the thought of money to be made is pretty alluring).
If you do it for the money, then you should think about your values or stop all together. It's only downhill from there.

you know you read all her stuff jo-ann.
stephen king's ok, i loved shawshank redemption because it was a nice change from his stupid stuff about a truck becoming possessed or a pyromaniac girl or stuff like that.

Stephen King has written some awesome books though .. The Green Mile
My Aunt adores him and has every book ever written by him so I've read quite a few of them too .. we had to read Misery in Highschool

yeah, The Green Mile's ok too. I prefer his nonfictionish fiction, though, i.e. Shawshank Redemption. Green Mile was fun and a barrel of monkeys, but the unbelievableness threw me off. and the mouse the prisoner had did too.
