OLP opening for AVRIL!
WHY IS EVERYBODY SO ANGRY???
As far as I am concerned opening up for Avril is a step up from opening for Creed. I just want to see OLP in concert again. I would go see OLP open up Kris Kross or even Dolly Parton, let alone Avril. OLP deserves to sell more records. OLP's actual show will be probably about the same length as Avril. Whether CM's want to admit it or not, Avril is selling a lot more records than OLP, right now. They toured Europe without many people at their shows, so opening up for any high profiled act is good. Why not expand OLP Europian fan base by touring with Avril. Heck, they might even want to tour the US with her? How pissed would you be then.
So in closing, relax everybody. And OLP better tour closer to Toronto, than Ottawa.

well, i will explain why I am angry, I can't speak for naybody else. SO what if Avril sold more records? is she better? OLP have always said it doesn't matter how many records they sell. the Backstreet Boys have sold more records than OLP and Avril combined. is it okay for them to OPEN for the Backstreet Boys? I REALLY hope this doesn't happen to OLP, but we all know what happens to a band that the teenies are crazy about. Ex: when I was in 6th grade, dookie came out and everybody was OBSESSED with greenday. i always loved them, not because evrybody else did, but because i loved the music. i went back to school in 7th grade and all the sudden, it said "Greenday Sucks!" on the same backbacks thatit said "Greenday" all over three motnhs ago! it was like an alterate universe or osmething.
my niece owns every Britney album. up until now, britney was SO cool and everybody loved her, but now...now they act as if they never liked her! guess who their new favorite is? AVRIL. Avril will be replaced by somebody else next year.
My point? Why does OLP all the sudden need this audience? the audience that will COMPLETELY over-expose them, play the out, and then be done iwth them. And I'm sorry, but once you have teeny fans, you have to cater to hose fans with teeny music. it just sucks all around. i'm angry because I see an AWESOME band going downhill in an attempt to conquer the world, or whatever. OLP worked hard to get where they are---they don't need to be opening for a POP act that did nothing but hold a guitar and have a band of guys standing behind her to gain credibility.
If the amount of records you sell determines how good you are, then the Backstreet Boys and NSync should be up there. And in that case, OLP are one of the worse bands out there right now....when did "high profile" become good? so what if they opened for Moby? nobody is saying not to cross genres, just don't stoop to low level to gain a fan base that you claim you never wanted. whether it's sony or whether its OLP, it just sucks.thats all.
and yes, kriss kross would be nice.....

BUT! I will not be angered by this any longer becuase I found out otnight that OK GO are plaing irving Plaza on feb.7th and I'm SUPER excited!

this boggles my mind.
some of you people are so upset about the decision to tour/open for avril, a decision they may not have had much say in.
but you're PERFECTLY ALL RIGHT with their decision to make subpar music.

OLP have had teenbopper fans from the very beginning .. there are plenty of teenybopper fans right on this very board .. the age of their fans shouldn't be an issue .. I was a teenybopper when I first heard of them too and I'm still a fan 10 years later .. some of these fans will forget about them .. some will be fans for years to come just like we are, will this hurt olp? NO ... and Avril DID do something to get where she was .. she's been singing since she was like 6 year olds and yes she was found easier then olp but who cares? the fact is, Avril is HUGE in Europe and Olp is NOTHING in Europe yet .. that's why she's the headliner .. should it be a big deal? NO

While I'm trying to stay away from this argument, I just wanna clarify something for everyone.
A "teenybopper" isn't necessarily a young fan. Entirely different things. Teenyboppers like bands for one of two reasons. Either because it's trendy to do so or because they think a member of said band is "hot". They do not care for the music one bit. Also, if you happen to think a member of one of your favorite bands is hot, it doesn't make you a teenybopper. It only does if that's your ONLY reason for liking the band. Teenyboppers can be 10 years old or 40. It doesn't matter.
At least, that's the definition of the word that's most commonly used by everyone I've ever talked to. And I'm pretty sure it's what people meant when they were talking about teenies. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Nikki is right. I was 13 when I started listening to OLP---the term has nothing to do with age and everything to do with behavior. I'll say it AGAIN, the backstreet boys were HUGE in europe too---bigger than Avril. is it okay for OLP to open for them?? Just because someboyd is successful--more so than you are---doesn't mean you go and be "second rate" to them because it will get little girls swooning. Duncan once said something about how theres nothing wrong with being a twelve eyar old girl, but they want to take everything as a love song when its not. and that anything thats detrimental to the music is bad for the band. In less kindwords, it means he thinks that teenies are bad for the band. Now they've become the target market. I don't have too see it and even if i did, i would just leave after OLP played---the point isnt whther you have to see it or not. the pointis that they're compromising themselves---or SONY is compromising them.

who cares? They're playing at the same place as Avril.. good for them. I do find it a little disturbing that a band who has put out 5 quality albums now is openning for a rookie but hey, whatever.

well, i was originally planning to nag them to death until they play iwth OK Go, but Kriss Kross does sound like a better idea. maybe Raine could come out with his tie backward, duncan could put a hole in the OTHER side of his shirt, and uh...i can't think of naything with steve and jeremy.

Exactly, OLP has worked hard to get to where they are and they do NOT need to sink back into opening, like I said in my earlier post.
And who's from Europe here, and who can confirm me that Avril Lavaign is really THAT big in Europe. After all, OLP did a lot of promotion in Europe, they even said that people know the words to 4AM when they performed in Europe.
I'm not angry, just getting more and more dissapointed.[/quote]

Ya know, no matter how much promotion you do, it doesn't guarantee there will be fans pouring in to see you. I know it's not the same class of music, but Alkaline Trio spent a couple of months promoting their asses off in Europe, but I bet if you ask 10 people who Alkaline Trio was, you'd be lucky to find one person that knows who they are. It all depends on the catchiness of your music, not how many radio interviews you do.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

Avril Lavigne is pretty big here in the UK. All the shows except one are sold out 3 months beforehand. She's playing 3 nights at Brixton Academy (4,000 capacity) - so that's basically an arena's worth of people. I can't say about the rest of Europe, but the shows in Brussels and Germany were sold out too when I looked last night.
And yes, we do know all the words to 4am, but we know all the words to everything because we love the albums and keep playing them. If they played something that was never a single anywhere as many people would know the words.
In the UK there's been no promotion of OLP anywhere other than OMA being played 3 times on MTV back in 1999 and a few articles in music magazines. I think it's better in some other countries (especially Holland) but they're nowhere near like the level that Avril's getting.
Personally, I'm a bit disappointed that I have to pay more to see OLP do a shorter set with less/no fans. But I'm not complaining because at least I'll get to see them and that's always a good thing. I think I posted somewhere else that I have friends who like Avril's music and have her album - 27 year old guys included. It's not just 13 year old girls. And anyway, the London shows are over 14s only

And it's all down to Sony who tours with who, and hopefully they know what they're doing - they must do their research before doing things like this.
Now if I could only get tickets for more of these concerts ...

I don't have a probelm with Avril Lavigne. Well, I do, she's a blatent fake and her attitude ("i'm a rock star, not a pop star, im going to rebel") sucks. But y'know, fair dues to her - what I've heard of her stuff isn't too bad and it seems to be working. So...well done to her.
I DO, however, have a problem with her fans. The majority of them are like 12 year olds who wouldn't appreciate good music if it bit their nose. they DEFINATELY do not deserve Our Lady Peace. And Avril Lavigne doesn't deserve OLP opening for her. It's just not right.
BUT.....*more importantly* how am I going to get to see them? Birmingham's sold out and I dont' fancy my chances of being able to pressurize people into travelling with me. Which sucks. If any of you English people manage to get tickets...let me know how. I need to see them again
