Old Mike Turner interview

Post by nikki4982 »

I just stumbled on this... and it's very interesting to read, knowing that he actually did leave the band. I don't know the exact date of the interview, but it's (obviously) old:

What are you're hopes for Our Lady Peace in the future? Do you see the band being a long-term act?

Mike Turner: I don't know. I hope so obviously. But, I think more than "hopes for" there are "fears of". It would be a great fear of mine that we would do this because it's a good paycheck. I hope we only ever do this because we think there's an opportunity to make good music, and to do something musically, creatively, and artistically. If I ever get the sense that it's not that, then I'll leave. That would just be my integrity in the role of the band that is what my hopes are. With that in mind, if we all maintain our integrity, I don't see why we wouldn't be a long-term band.

:crying: I really don't like that. At all. Do you guys think that's why he actually left??...... I'm thinking... yes. :( I love Gravity, but... well... yeah. No need to go into details... Bob Rock... blah blah blah... yeah. *sigh*

 I'm thinking that's why he left .....
Thats also why I respect him the most of all the members,
I'm just hoping the rest of them did gravity to try something new like
they say, and not just to make money/get popular.

after reading that it makes you think that $$ or popularity is more important to the band than music

but OLP is still my fav band and always will be

and yeah, mike must have left because of that
i think they kicked him out of the band but...

i knew this all along.
we are the brand new beatniks. we are the down and outers.
we are the bleeding hearts, beating syncopated, broken rhythm.
our speed is often break neck. we need to slow it down.
tired of being sleepless. tired of being broken.

Even in gravity i find the songs that mike helped with are some of the best
/not enough, story about a girl/

he really cared a lot about making good music over money and he will be missed

Which songs did Steve do? I heard somewhere he only did 3. Anyone know which ones?
Some of you probably think I left. But was I ever here to start?

I don't think he really did any songs. He may have laid down a few lead licks for a few songs, but it was mostly Mike and Jamie.

Really? I'm surprised that he didn't get credit for it.

Maybe you're thinking of Mike. He did 3 songs (check out the liner notes).

Well, somebody had better mop up some of that l337 and bring it to me. I need something to recharge my guitar playing energy.

Cry me a fucking river Mike. Your whole reason for joining a band was to make music right? For people to hear it, not for you to abandon it. There's a thing called compromise.

Yeah, his whole reason for *starting* the band was to make GOOD music. I totally understand how Gravity would have gotten under his skin.

And you obviously have no fucking clue what you're talking about. No one leaves so incredibly LUCRATIVE a job as being a fucking rock star unless they have a real reason.

Thank you.

Mike = God.

I can't believe you said that. People make music not to please others, but to satisfy their desire to express themselves. People (as in the pubic) are fickle, and you're compromising yourself by putting out what others want to hear for that sake alone.

I say we just agree that Mike left for reasons that are his and OLP's only and leave it at that. He left, there's nothing we can do about it. We shouldn't keep trying to figure out why he left. Making assumptions about why he left isn't fair to him or the band.
