Vermont show

Post by mrblack »

It was fantastic. That is an understatement for it. I sat in the balcony with my two friends. The opening band, Fingertight, I didn't really like.

OLP came on and ruled the stage. I've been a fan since Clumsy, but this is my first time seeing them in concert (which I regret, I wish I had seen them with Mike. I had the opportunity to see them at the Buzz Fest in Burlington in 97, but I didn't go.)

Here's the set list (in order, I brought a pad and pen to write it down):

All For You
Do You Like It?
Superman's Dead (which was one of the highlights for me, there was a lot of energy)
Naveed/Life (I love the way they did Life and the little jam before the verse)
Not Enough
Bring Back The Sun
One Man Army
Whatever (Raine talked about Chris Benoit before it)
Is Anybody Home?
Innocent
Right Behind You (I was looking forward to this, one of my faves)
The Birdman (the heavy jam part at the end was cool)
Clumsy
Are You Sad? (Raine talked before this also)
Starseed (where Raine asked everybody to get up)

Encore
In Repair (OMG, another of my favorites)
Somewhere Out There (got the most crowd reaction, of course)
Neon Crossing (I wasn't expecting this)
4 AM (sing along was pretty good, I was one of the few in my section of the balcony who sang though, I alone, sang the high "And I hope to God I figure out what's wrong" near the end, I also sang the harmonies on other songs that Duncan or Steve didn't sing, such as the higher part in In Repair.)

Raine's voice was pretty good, he sang One Man Army lower than usual (maybe he's been doing this on the whole tour, I don't know.) Steve, Duncan, and Jeremy were all in top form.

Great show, best concert I've been to. The only thing that I didn't appreciate, I kind of liked it though, was that nobody but me was singing in my section. I sang every song. I was hoping there would be more huge fans there (in my section, I'm sure in other sections there were fans who were singing along and knew all the words to every song).

You said Raine spoke before Are You Sad. What was he saying? I don't remember him talking before AYS this year.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

He said this song is about trying to help someone and no matter how many times you try to help them, they dont want to listen to you.

exactly, areusad831, and he also said that that's a real drag.

Another cool thing that happened was after the solo and during the chorus of Whatever, they stopped because somebody in the pit must have fallen down (I didn't see it, so I don't know for sure), and Raine said that they have to take care of each other. They then took it from the solo.

One thing that I thought was kind of lame was that some people in the pit took out lighters during BBTS. Very cliched. And besides, that song doesn't really strike me as a "lighter song".

Also, I think that Raine and Duncan looked at me, I could be wrong and they could have been looking at someone behind me, but no one else in my section of the balcony was as into it as I was, singing along to every song, etc.

The only thing that could have possible made this show any better was if Blister, Annie, Story Of 100 Aisles, Carnival, Stealing Babies, Automatic Flowers, etc. were in the set list. It was perfect as it was anyway (and plus, Steve may not know how to play those songs yet).

Matt

Oh yeah, one more thing. When Raine told everybody to get up before Starseed, he said, I'm pretty sure this is word for word from memory, "This isn't fucking church!" LOL.

yeah, i was in the pit, and we kept getting pushed from one side, then the other side would compensate by pushing back, and the people on the first side would get pushed..at that point, there was an especially hard push from the left side -- i almost fell on my head that that time -- so the right side, overadjusting themselves, pushed back harder, and people on the left side fell. i didn't see anyone who fell, but i am guessing that is what happened, since the push-back is usually harder than the initial push...if that makes sense at all...

that was really cool, but that whole show rocked my world! there were a few rowdy people there -- like this one girl who was like, jam-band dancing (kind of hopping from one foot to the other....if you're from VT, you probably know this well...) and she was the cause of many a pushing/falling episode, at least on my part.

as far as the songs they played, i would have preferred less gravity, but i think they did a really good job of not just playing all the new stuff, and keepin' it real with some of the older songs. THE BIRDMAN ROCKED MY SOCKS!!! that was so awesome, and with Raine just assaulting Steve...phew, it was orgasmic.

and i seriously almost cried at one point...i think it was during Innocent-->right behind you. i just realized that OLP probably saved my life as a teenager, and that I don't know what I would be like now without them... i am going to start crying now if i keep going on like this, so i will just stop.

Highlights-
When Raine said how he loved coming to this "cute little town" (about our largest city)

I was in the balcony and people kept telling me to sit down. Finally I just got really pissed and said, "you know what, this is a rock concert, stand up and show some enthusiasm!" Two or three songs after that Raine yelled at everyone to stand up. Suckas.

It was in Vermont. It makes me happy when they come here.
