The Moffatts

Post by nelison »

I am hooked on them right now, yes i know you think Moffatts you think of a bunch of kids singing pop songs but seriously Submodalities is a pretty awesome record. You can see a lot of OLP influence in their songs, and actually all the songs are pretty well written and it's got a very good rock feel to it. I got my gf hooked on OLP and now she's got me hooked on these guys (well not as obsessive as she's become of OLP but still...)

so ya lets hear what you all have to say, negative or positive...

and if you havint heard anything from them before, I recommend the songs "Spy", "Antifreeze & Aeroplanes", "Misery" (it's from their pop days but has a rock feel) and even "Bang Bang Boom" and "Just Another Phase"

it's too poseur. if they wanted to do this they should've come out and set themselves as a brit-pop/rock band, and attempted to forge their own sound.

instead, they released a ridiculous hanson-esque pop record. 3 years later when they were all a little older, they decided they wanted to gain a little bit of musical credibility like so many other boy bands do. fortunately for them, they both play their own instruments and write their own music so they were way ahead of every other shitty band trying to achieve this as well.

unfortunately for them, the record they made ended up sounding unsure and unoriginal. while i think they have talent and could probably produce something listenable, their second album relies too heavily on it's influences. they obviously aren't confident enough in their "rock credibility" to make an album based on what they want to play.

they need to find their own fans instead of trying to appeal to the fans of other bands by sounding like those bands.

besides, didn't they break up?

All I can say, is that I remember seeing them live at the junos a couple years ago and being pretty impressed.

ya they broke up last year, due to creative differences... and they are brothers so I'm guessing it'd be tough to always be around eachother all the time...

anyways I think their work was just a progression. Every band has it, although there's was a little more drastic due to their age, but none the less they progressed into a really good rock group, and if they were together still I would have to think that their sound would have only gotten better, and eventually could be compared to other Canadian bands like OLP, MGB, the Hip, Sloan etc...

The Moffatts .. Canadian brothers .. triplets and then the older bro .. they broke up last year cuz 2 of the members were thinking about going to college .. the others are in another band now called Pusch I believe .. or something like that so they're still around. I saw them live twice .. they put on an incredible show and I have their cd's .. they've been around forever .. even put out a cd when they were like 10 years old, or younger .. it was a country cd .. they experimented with pop, then tried going for a harder sound on their last cd .. good group of guys who write their own music/lyrics and actually play instruments .. way above any 'boy band' out there.
