Iron-On T-Shirts

who's done this?

Does it actually work? What colour shirts can you iron on to? Where does brett get iron paper? Thank you?

That's so weird that you'd ask this, since I haven't made any for a long time.

They do actually work. They work best on white t-shirts though, as any light or white colour of the picture doesn't actually use any ink and stays completely transparent, so if you had a bunch of white in a picture you wanted to iron onto a red shirt, all the white areas would just be red once you put it on the shirt.

They don't work on dark shirts at all. Which is why you're pretty much stuck to light colours, like white, grey and yellow.

You can get paper at places like Staples, Home Depot, probably futureshop, best buy etc... anywhere that sells a big variety of printer paper.

I made a bunch of the squares on that stupid quilt with iron ons and they turned out really cool. I also made a joke shirt a little while back. Besides the fact that it cracked easily it turned out a whole lot better then I expected. I'll post a picture in a few.

I've done this two or three times. I've had it work really well with black tshirts too. It just depends no the paper and the picture you get.

So this is the shirt I made. Up close you can see that it cracks pretty easily (which is frustrating) but it came out really well on the black. I got the iron-ons for these at Michaels (which was the cheapest and easiest to use) and this one was done with transfers made for 'dark shirts'.

Also on that one there are some water spots. That happened when I was out in the rain and I was wearing that shirt. It seems to be find in the washer...nothing will happen but in the rain the colors run. Figure that one out.

If you want to see, these are two of the squares I made with iron ons. Again I got these ones at michaels. But these were with light fabric transfer sheets.
The first one is just on regular t-shirt cotton material. The picture came out really well and clear. The transfer did leave some spots but I think if I had left it on a bit longer it would have been perfectly clear. The second one is done on a different material that had some design on the fabric. You can sort of see how that shows through.

It's not actually white ink, There are the non-transparent iron-ons with white backgrounds instead of the clear ones that I usually use. they allow you to use white on dark t-shirts, but as Sarah said they crack easily. I find the clear ones don't crack as much if ever. They eventually fade after a lot of washes.

Also, a very important tip.

If you're going to make a t-shirt and you buy a brand new t-shirt that's never been worn, wash it once or twice before doing the iron-on. If you don't, all the excess fabric that would normally come off in the wash will often make the colours of your iron-ons run together or fade after only one wash.

haha i love iron-on t-shirts, that's what I give as gifts at christmas time because im a cheap bastard, so far i've made:

"I <3 Star Jones" t-shirt with a giant (literally) picture of Star Jones

"Los Fancy Free fan club" (a horrible band me and my friend saw)

"David Hasselhoff is sexy" (with a picture of him naked with puppies)

"Future Mrs. Gnecco" (with a picture of my friend and Jimmy Gnecco to wear at the next show ... unfortunately she did not)

oh and then a shirt for my brother with his face on it ... just because

Gimme Shelter collided with my friend Shane at hockey one night and gave him a concussion. Shane ended up looking like he had two black eyes because of it and we took pictures of him, then I photoshopped a crown on his head and made a T-shirt out of it that said "HALO 2 KING" for him to wear to a Halo 2 tournament here at a local movie theatre.

The best part is, he never really played Halo before that, and our local news paper took tons of pictures of him wearing his T-shirt.
