Spelling Bee

So a couple days ago me and my friends were in the theatre watching Gerry (I will not comment on this movie), and the trailer of Spellbound came up. This is a documentary of the 8 children making their way to the National Spelling Bee in Washington.
Why do they do this? What is the logic behind gathering thousands of children and forcing them to mechanically memorize these most obscure words that would never get to be used in real life? I pity those children, and I pity those who discovers joy by tormenting these poor children. Would something like "Champion of National Spelling Bee Competition 1993" really help you in any way? What does this say about the world we live in? Maybe Bethany can tell me how fun it is to point our other's spelling mistake on various message boards, maybe the satisfaction of being the best speller on the internet is that enticing! I really don't know.

I was a good speller and good at those things but I used to deliberately misspell words so I could go sit down .. I was an extremely shy kid and I hated having to stand up in front of everyone

Why the fuck are you singling out Bethany? There are others on this message board who correct others' spelling in half their posts, and she is not one of them. And I don't see what in the world is wrong with having good spelling skills.

I find the posts about bad grammar very annoying, It really doesn't bother me when others spell incorrectly, because I always know what they mean. But while we are on the subject, I found this just the other day:
http://www.iespell.com/download.php . It spell checks messages in Internet Explorer for you.

Alright, I apologize, now that you highlighted that part I see it's really singling out Bethany. By no means I'm trying to say Bethany is

for pointing out other's mistakes.
< is feeling

Yeah, I used to be forced into the state spelling bee yearly. I definitely had to turn the microphone away from the crowd or else I would freeze up and just walk away. It was pretty cool though, never having to look at the crowd and all.

I won a spelling bee, as you all know. It really is a useless talent unless you plan on becoming some sort of writer, and then it makes your editor less pissed-off. It really gives you a feeling of being smart, but I have a photographic memory, so it is easy for me to remember a word and how it looks on paper so I can spell it out.

I always wanted to be in a spelling bee but I never got the chance... and as for correcting internet spelling, I can only speak for myself but it's absolutely compulsive in my case. Maybe I'm OCD but I cannot stand it when things are misspelled.

Really? You don't like it when people spell things incorrectly?

No, why do you ask?

my mom thinks I have OCD for spelling because I'm seriously anal about things that are spelled wrong in books and magazines. like on the back of a book I'm reading it says "wookie." the real spelling is "wookiee." yeah, well maybe if I wasn't such a geek, but still....
