I was wondering...
What do you guys do for a living? Study, work?

I'm currently trying to get my degree in Graphic Design and am working almost fulltime at an e-Learning company as a webmaster.

What about you?

I'm at Uni and haven't chosen a major yet.
This summer I work full time at the university library, scanning masters theses for the digital archives. That's right - I scan the covers of books for 7 hours a day. It's stimulating.

I'm still in high school, but looking for a part-time job to pay for car. No idea where though.

That's how I started my career at Walmart. It was just a part time job for the summer, so I could buy a truck. At the end of the summer, I was going to quit. 12 summers and 3 trucks later, here I am.

I'm finishing Junior High while my profession is listening to Stealing Babies 16 times a day.

I have worked in retail since I was 15! I'm now 22, and having just convocated from university, I'm officially hunting for a real job.

However, I have a feeling a degree in linguistics is going to get me absolutely nowhere.

I would enjoy being a professional student. Seriously, I would absolutely adore being in school the rest of my life. I am the biggest nerd ever.

i've also been thinking about staying in school to do a ph.d., but i think i'm going to try for a job instead. i think i'm done with school for now.

What exactly does your degree entail?

right now i'm doing graduate studies in Creative Writing. i will stay in academia as long as possible, because it is the best way to make a living as a poet.

In other words the only way to make a living as a poet is to keep deferring your ever increasing student loan bills untill your out of school?

pretty much . . . except i've been given grant money that covers my expenses. so really, what i'm saying, is to be a poet you must perfect the art of writing grant applications so that you are paid to stay in school where you are required to produce poetry in order to maintain your funding . . .

So what happens when you run out of classes to take?

probably i'll have to carve out a place for myself either in academia (teaching/writing critical articles/writer-in-residence programs) or in publishing.
really, i'll be worrying about that when i get there. for now, i have 2 years in which to write 2 book-length works + classwork to do. after that, i'll figure out how to make a living that allows me to continue writing as much as i can.

Become an underwriter for a student loan company.

You'll have first hand knowledge and experience with the subject and you can write small print for hours on end.

my dad suggested i become an underwriter for the bank he works for. actually, it's his joke to any of his colleagues who ask me what i'm going to do when i'm done school.
