Do sentences really make that much of a difference? I mean you understood it didn't you? It was a sentence technically anyway just a really long run on sentence.

oh man, this guy i went to high school with was just shot to death. i wasn't his friend or anything, seeing that he hung out with the popular kids and i was the furthest thing from the popular kids, but you just never think something like that would happen to people you know.
