you know how a lot of people learn to play songs from tab? it tells you what cords to play, to play the song unfortunatley i need to know what note each string plays, i think i'm gonna need to buy a book so i can learn

i just got my guitar today i'm totally new at it, the only thing i can play is the opening to nirvana-smells like teen spirit, and if i knew what string was what not then i might be able to read tab...but until then HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
