Congrats on the new house Matt! Is it in good shape or does it need some TLC like mine? Mine....still needs lots of TLC but it's much nicer than it was. Now if only the HOA would all die. Seriously.

PS, I hate early morning meetings every single day. Why? I miss my days of being able to go in whenever I want and just making sure to work the 8 hours! Gr.

Thanks Cass. The house is in great shape. We're going to repaint and put down laminate flooring, since it's all carpeted.

Why laminate?

Easier to clean.

I would choose hardwood or laminate over carpet any day! If you see what I clean off my hardwood everyday it would freak you out about what is actually in your carpets!

Are you by any chance thinking of laminate, as in tile looking stuff, generally found in older kitchens, as opposed to laminate that looks like hardwood?

And I live in a building that was built in 1929. I have the original hardwood. It's beyond gorgeous, and thus I now despise laminate.

Laminate that looks like hardwood. The house was built in 2003, so I'm guessing under the carpet padding is just plywood. My mom's house was built in 1955, and has hardwood flooring in the hallways (and under the carpet in the living room and bedrooms, but they never have taken it up) which I really love. Real hardwood floors look amazing, and I can imagine how nice yours are if they have been taken care of.

So, yes, the plan is to put down the hardwood laminate through the majority of the house. Hallways, living room, kitchen, and the basement. The basement is finished and adjacent to the garage. We have thought about leaving the bedrooms carpeted, but are undecided. This is all contingent upon how much money it will cost as well.

My house has real hardwood and it is the original from 1951. I love the real stuff but also see the benefits of laminate - it looks good and is easy to take care of! You won't have to re-finish like you do hardwood, it costs less to install and installation is actually pretty easy.

Laurel, I bet your building is gorgeous, I love old homes, especially with original wood work.

Sorry, Matt, I was replying to Johnny - probably should have quoted it. I thought he was talking about tile through the entire house, like you would do with laminate. Which I thought was odd.

Surprisingly, for this being an apartment building, the hardwood is in amazing shape. It's the older style, with thin strips of wood, and is a rich warm golden colour. It doesn't look cold like a lot of laminate does. I used to love either hardwood or laminate...but I've now been spoiled with real hardwood since I moved into this building, and am thus a bit of a flooring snob.

Luckily I never had to pay for the flooring. That would suck.

Nah, I'm talking about real tile, not laminate. A entry way/kitchen with marble tiles would look amazing. My folks have laminate flooring every where and it looks truly hideous.

We put carpet in a lot of our house, I actually really like carpet. We put it in all the bedrooms/hallways. We have wood laminate in the family room and basement. I don't mind it but I like the dark tones more than the light. It's sure a lot better then the old laminate stuff! And for bathrooms, I prefer tile. Ours has laminate but we're planning to replace it one of these days. You know, after the counter, and the cupboards, and the molding, etc, etc.
