OTTAWA - A woman's 40-year battle for veteran's benefits has ended in victory.
Annie MacKenzie, 84, has been fighting to collect the benefits she was entitled to ever since her husband died in 1968. An administrative error at the Veterans Affairs Department was to blame for the problem.
Information about her husband's disability was not transferred from his paper file to the department's computer database, preventing MacKenzie from collecting the money due to her until Wednesday.
New Democrat MP Peter Stoffer is urging the Conservative government to bring Pension Act rules in line with those of the Canada Pension Plan.
That would allow the veteran's affairs minister to take "remedial action as appropriate" in case of erroneous advice or administrative error.
Currently, the Pension Act only allows retroactive benefits up to five years.
