Raine just said that Mike will do great things, just not with a six stringed instrument. So that definitly shows some tension. I read it in a few articles actually. In the other one it says that raine said that mike just wasnt meant to play guitar

Here's one of the aritcles, i found the part of the article here::

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

Yet things weren’t always so rosy. Close to breaking up towards the end of touring 2001’s ‘Spiritual Machines’ – an album heavily influenced by Ray Kurzweil’s Orwell-style book of the same name – it was a new guitarist in the form of 24-year-old Steve Mazur who provided a much-needed lifeline. “If we hadn’t made the decision to replace Mike (Turner, former guitarist), I don’t think we’d be here right now,” says Raine candidly. “When you’re in the middle of something and you’ve got a record deal you don’t want to rock the boat. But with the fifth album you get to a point where if you want to keep going you have to make a change. I don’t know if Mike was born to be a guitar player. The studio was a tough place for him and we were working too hard to make up for it – we felt like we were cheating ourselves. Four albums is way too fucking long to put up with that. I’m sure he’ll do great things, just not with six-stringed instruments.”

It surprised me when Raine said that they were working hard to make up for Mikes inability to play/record in studio. Oh Well, I guess we will never know the full story.

:freak: Whoa. That's gotta be some falling out, for Raine to question Emtee's guitar skills...

*sigh*

How about we don't assume things? It's possible that Raine said that with the utmost respect for Mike as a human being, and just doesn't think he's a great guitar player. Should we penalize Raine for speaking his mind? I don't think so. I think honesty's an important thing.

And, as much as you want to question it and say that Emtee's amazing (and I'm not saying he's not, I love the work he's done with OLP and out of it), none of us, and I mean NONE of us were in the studio when OLP recorded any albums with Mike. We don't know what went down, if he did have problems recording, or whatever.

Granted, Raine's statements were harsh, but that doesn't mean you should lose respect for him.

I listened twice to the podcast in case I'd missing Duncan talking, but he wasn't on there :crying: stupid olp.com lying.

Here's the article people were talking about in full: http://www.olp.cc/articles/2002/Article ... kSound.htm

We spoke to Raine about Mike one time and without going into too much detail, the impression I got was that he definitely still respected Mike as a person, but his guitar playing/writing skills (or lack of) were holding them back. And I know you all love Mike and stuff, and rightly so, but I'm afraid I have to believe Raine based on this conversation and some other stuff I've heard about.

Anyway, to get back on topic ...

woo podcast!
Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.

And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.

Thats called Will the Future Blame us, is a very good song. I think theyre gonna release one of these podcasts every week from not on.

And about Mike , it is too bad, but like nikki said, we werent in the studio, maybe he was holding the band back and having difficulties, who knows, maybe he just didnt "fit the band" like steve supposedly does. Who knows, he sure made good music though.

It wouldn't surprise me if Mike wasn't as fast/creative in the studio as the band would have liked, but I think that all four of his albums, all 42 officially released songs, plus his live performances, are a better way to guage his skill than Raine. Really, are you going to sit there and praise the guitarist you and your band just broke up with?

My first thought was that perhaps they had Jamie and/or Lanni doing most of the guitar playing/writing. However, look at Gravity. Jamie did most of the guitar work after Mike left, yet all of the songs that Mike was credited for writing/playing on have the best guitar on the album (unless you prefer straight-forward power chord rock).

So maybe Mike wasn't well-suited for the pressures of a studio recording schedual. In any case, what he produced each time was absolutely brilliant.

I dont think he was a bad guitar player, definitly not. But maybe, like Raine said, he just wasnt suited for OLP and their style of music. For all we know, maybe there is some truth in what Raine is saying?

I don't want to get into this argument. I have my reasons for thinking like I do, you have your reasons for feeling they way you do.

And listening to it again, yep it is WTFBU? that bit sounds different to when they do it live.

Yup, the studio version is jst more refined, its quite a good song though. I like the live versions better then the album versio though. Its a great live song. Does anyone know if they played it at the closing ceremonies yesterday?

Mike wasn't credited for anything on Gravity officially. It doesn't surprise me that the band and Mike are on bad terms. They replaced him after 10 years of service, I mean it's like being married and then trading your spouse in for a younger person who they feel has more to offer. I mean, wouldn't you feel like crap? The fact that Raine spoke like that doesn't make me lose any respect for him, at least he's being honest.

He's in the booklet for rhythm guitar on Innocent, and a few other songs I'm too sleepy to recall.
