start > settings > network connections and then right click the one you're on and go into properties, then select niternet protocol (tcp/ip) from the list and press the properties button. If "use the following dns server addresses" is selected, instead switch it to "obtain dns server address automatically." If "obtain dns server address automatically" is selected, switch it to "use the following dns server addresses" and put in 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 as the addresses. And then if that fixes it umm . . . try switching it back to how it was every once in a while to see if it is better.

Turns out it isn't DNS.

I don't know why but I just can't connect to my ISP. I emailed them and they claim it's not their problem because the ADSL light is on on my router and my modem - which they reckon means they're ok.

My stupid router doesn't give any indication as to why it doesn't connect. I'm not sure if I can make it tell me.

The modem gives error '769 - the specified destination is not reachable'

I emailed the ISP and they said to reinstall my modem software - which might be ok, if only I wasn't getting problems on the router too.

does anyone have any ideas?

Hmm I would email them again and ask them specifically how reinstalling modem software on your computer will fix problems that the router itself seems to be having.

How can evaluate the reliability of the various web hosting services?

Also, how can I evaluate the quality of a web hosting company's customer service? What can I expect in the way of customer service and security?

All I can offer is personal experiences. The CM uses hostrocket.com. I'd say we've had little to no real problems in the past 2 years that I've owned the board, and any time that we have had a problem, they have always been quick to reply to our service tickets. xjsb125.com is hosted by webmasters.com, and they have always had reliable, easy to use services. My only complaint is that their spam filter on email is way below standard.

So here's a question. If a good portion of somone's msn list is deleted and non of the addresses will readd, how does one fix this?

I am not stalking anyone! :P I was asking for someone else. A good portion of their list was deleted, and the emails won't readd when she tries to add them back in.

So I have been having problems with my computer latey when it gets really slow and draggy and annoying and I couldn't figure out why. Its not like I don't watch for spywear and viruses and our new internet connection is supposed to be high speed DSL. So I did a Trend Micro housecall scan. I discovered 2 things.

Apparently my computer is a sponge for spyware. I have and use Adaware and Spybot fairly regularly (and don't come up with much) and have AVG and stuff like that but I still came up with a ridiculious amout of spyware. Poor computer.

And the other thing that happened was a "Warning: Slow Internet Connection" sign came up telling me the scan would take like 20 minutes not the 4-5 it took before with my old connection. So yeah, slow draggy computer has been caused (at least partially)by the shitty-ness of my new connection.

I don't actually have a question, I just wanted to share this. Mainly because I am currently still scanning this computer for spyware/viruses when I started to do so at noon today. I think I need to invest in a new computer. And a new internet provider.

maybe you should try hovering your mouse over it, right clicking, or double clicking it?

My WMP won't stream videos and I get the green screen!

I tried fiddling with the connection speed to no avail.

Whatever should I do?

Does anyone know what a .tmp file is? I was looking at my windows files and among all the normal things that should be there are about 400 .tmp files and I have no idea what they are.
I want to just delete them because my computer is being a bitch, but I'm afraid they might actually be for something.

temporary files

i would say that if they haven't been used for ages they're ok to delete. if their dated today there's a chance they could still be in use and deleting them might break stuff.
