Ok, so I got new ram and a new tower. I reformatted, but my CPU is running really high and there is just something not right. So I'm going to reformat again today. The thing is, I need to know beforehand what sort of protection to get so I don't some program running in the background as soon as I install something.

-What sort of spyware and anti virus should I get and get for free? My bro says using the microsoft anti spyware thing works for him and he doesn't get viruses, but I don't know if I trust him.

-What torrent program should I get, I think ABC was installing something in the background

-Any other bits of advice

Get ad-aware and spybot for your spyware/adware needs. There will be some on this board who will tell you to stay away from ad-ware but personally it's never given me any problems and shouldnt for you either.

Then again you might not want to take my advice. I moved to the mac world a few months ago so I'm quite out of touch with the virus/adware because macs simply do not get adware/spyware and rarely get viruses.

I recommend spy-bot and spy sweeper....though spy sweeper isnt free. However, I am sure that spy bot is free. As for spy sweeper, perhaps you can find a pirated copy.

As for virus protection, I think that AVG anti virus software is free. Don't hold my word on it though.

I use ABC... I've never had issues with it, dunno what you're talking about Cass ... cept when files that are stupid decide to freeze the program on me.

And, as far as spy/adware programs go... I use like 38294729382748429 of them together. So yeah, if you want, I can list them. Together, they cause me to get more or less no spy/adware. :duncan:

Bazooka Spyware Scanner (doesn't remove, but when you use it to scan, it catches just about everything and tells you how to remove it manually)
Spybot - Search & Destroy
PestPatrol
Spyware Blaster
Spyware Guard

And I have Norton SystemWorks Premier (which, of course, includes AntiVirus) for virii.

... oh, but be prepared to not view some webpages because they have embedded spy/adware that one of those programs blocks.

Sounds like a good thing if you can't view those pages. What websites have you not been able to view. The sad fact of the matter is, I don't go that many places on the internet

Ok, when I go to google and start typing something, it always tries to finish my words, but that's hella annoying because it's been saving searches for so long that no matter what I put in, it'll try to finish it.

How do I either stop it from trying to help me, or delete everything and start again?

Turning off AutoComplete completely

If you don't like seeing your user names, passwords, and other information sitting in drop-down windows, tell Windows to stop by doing this:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Choose Internet Options from the Tools menu.
3. Click the Content tab.
4. Click the AutoComplete button.
5. Click to remove checkmarks from these items:

* Web addresses
* Forms
* User names and passwords on forms
* Prompt me to save passwords

6. Click the Clear Forms button.
7. Click the Clear Passwords button.
8. Click OK.

Deleting old entries from the Search Companion

But you're not through yet. Windows XP's Search Companion also includes an AutoComplete feature, so it can remember every file and phrase you've searched for. Here's how to turn it off, as well:

1. Choose Search from the Start menu.
2. Choose Change Preferences.
3. Choose Turn AutoComplete off.

Although this stops the Search Companion's little doggy from saving your future search strings, it won't erase the existing entries. To do that, download and run this program from Doug Knox' Web site.

Many programs, including Media Player and your Start menu, keep lists of your Most Recently Used files in a drop down box below your File menu. These lists can be deleted also, but they require a different clean-up method.

Typically, a site with advertising. A lot of times I can refresh a few times til the ad cycles and one comes up that doesn't have embedded spy/adware, and the page loads... but on sites without rotating banners, that doesn't work.

I usually run into the problem on news sites, mostly.
