I was sort of expecting this album to be very organic with minimal electronics / beats -- something a little more in line with Phil's solo work than Thom's solo work. On the first listen the first few tracks kind of threw me off. Morning Mr. Magpie was a bit of a surprise and will take some time before I get used to. My fault for spending the past 8 years listening to the solo version Thom webcast during the HTTT sessions.

But I loved Feral and everything beyond that!

Album wasn't what I was expecting. Can't really say I dislike, but it's really not for me.

What were you expecting? It fits right in with Kid A and Amnesiac but doesn't exactly follow the trajectory of In Rainbows.

Exactly, didn't really follow the trajectory of In Rainbows.

Plus I prefer their albums like OK Computer and In Rainbows.. But even their electronic albums had things for me to enjoy (Optimistic, The National Anthem, Everything in Its Right Place, In Limbo, I Might Be Wrong). Didn't really have those with The King of Limbs.

I think the only big difference with this album is that it doesn't rely on what I consider the band's most defining timbres - their Fender guitars and Ondes Martenot. At least I don't recall any emphasis from the first two listens. I'd say overall it sounds more like the b-sides from Amnesiac than any of their albums.

Also, I was really looking forward to hearing a studio version of The Daily Mail. Hopefully it'll be on a future release!

After some further listening, I'm picking up on a lot more familiar guitar work, tones, etc. on The King of Limbs.

The first couple times through I was too distracted by some of the parts that jump straight to the surface (the complex beats in Bloom and Morning Mr. Magpie, the slightly unorthadox pitch shifting in the looped keyboard in Bloom). Now that I'm starting to get a little more familiar with it, it's definitely beginning to shine.

This isn't news, but a question. Are any of you Canadians familiar with My Darkest Days? I'm seeing Seether next month, and MDD is opening for them.

They have a mediocre single that gets played here from time to time called "Porn Star Dancing". Nothing amazing, that's for sure. I'd imagine they are a half decent warm up band. Totally along the lines of NB, Theory of a deadman, Seether, so there ya go.

My Darkest Days are bland and mediocre but the aforementioned "Porn Star Dancing" was a moderate hit.

It's played all the time on my modern rock station... I hate my modern rock station. I don't consider current Kid Rock or Ozzie as "modern"...

New Foo Fighters album, Wasting Light, is up for stream on their site with over a week until it's release. Haven't listened yet, but apparently it's their best in quite awhile.

My Darkest Days were surprisingly pretty good live. I didn't have a lot of expectation for them, but their lead guitar player was really good. They need to lose the keyboard, all the keys sounded the same on every song. Same pattern over and over. Otherwise, I'd give them a hi C, low B.
