Rap/Hip-Hop?

Postby MindsOnLoan » 2/16/2010, 7:27 pm

Obviously on a forum for a rock band, rock is going to be the most popular type of music. But I'm curious, does anyone here like rap/hip-hop? If so, what artists? Because while I'd say I'm more into rock, I'm also a pretty big rap fan.

I really like Nas, Kanye West (besides his work on 808s and Heartbreak), Lupe Fiasco, Jay-Z, Eminem, Drake, Common, Biggie, and 2Pac. Cam'ron is also good for a laugh, since his lines are so randomly funny.

Rappers I like well enough or just haven't gotten that into yet are Lil Wayne (not a huge fan, but he's grown on me some after enough driving around with my friends cranking it up), Dr. Dre, Kid Cudi, T.I., and OutKast. Then there's some other artists I like a few songs of, but don't listen to outside of that.

I also plan on giving Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and a few others a try sometime soon.

I'm thirteen so being a 21st century boy i love rap. I would go for Kanye, JAY-Z, Eminem, Run DMC, T.I., Kid Cudi, OutKast, Andre 3000, Big Boi, Lil Wayne, Ludacris And Kevin Rudolf.

Jay-z is by far my favorite. I also like nu-metal/rap rock like RATM, Korn (kinda), and early incubus.

I also don't like Kanye's work on 808's but everything from College Dropout to Graduation.

Rap is whack, yo.

JK. I can't stand it, really. If it comes on, I change the channel (with a few very rare exceptions, although I hear it so rarely on the stations I listen to I can't even name any of the artists I will listen to).

I guess I just don't understand the medium. Raine's spoken word is about as close to rap as I can tolerate.

I really recommend Nas and Lupe Fiasco for anyone into rap. Lupe has only had two albums so it's pretty easy to dive in (unless you check out mixtapes too). For Nas I would start with his debut (which most consider his best album) Illmatic.

The closest thing to rap I listen to is Rage Against the Machine's underground counterpart known as Downset. They have a heavy metal element that make the rapping sound so urgent and meaningful. And the lyrics speak out about and against gang life such as rape and police brutality. A positive message! :duncan:

Correction: Downset, not Reset! Oy.

I sure don't. La Familia is certainly not one of Jay-Z's best. He doesn't even appear on every song. It's a collaboration album with Jay's name tagged on to it to sell records. I know a lot of people like it but there is no way La Familia can be ranked higher than The Blueprint or The Black Album. Both are hip hop classics and both came after La Familia. Both are also better than Blueprint 3 (although I did like it).

You're right but i did really enjoy it. But i forgot Kingdom Come which is what i think i meant to say. That would probably be my favorite. I personally think Blueprint3's the best of the Blupreint albums though, although the previous two were also great.

It's certainly the most accessible and catchy. However, I think the original Blueprint will forever be considered Jay-Z's best record. It changed hip hop music in ways that The Blueprint 3 never will. At the time, Jay-Z had something to prove. Their was the feud going on between him and Nas, and a number of other rappers. In many ways, The Blueprint was a response to his detractors. The Blueprint 3 seems like just yet another victory lap. While fun to listen to, it isn't nearly the artistic statement the original Blueprint was.

Plus Jay-Z wrote the lyrics for Blueprint in two days. Insane.

Holy crap...2 days? jeez.

Still all his records are great in my opinion.

M2, you should check out "Jaydiohead." It's a remix project put together by Max Tannone, and puts Jay-Z's songs to Radiohead "beats." (Similar to Dangermouse's Grey Album). It's pretty slick as long as your not some sort of rap or rock purist. Check it out. You can listen and download it for free. I'd start with Wrong Prayer. It combines Jay-Z's "Prayer" from American Gangster and Radiohead's "I Might Be Wrong" from Amnesiac.
