TTYNKAM (TYPDCAA) IV
One of my dreams came true.
There was a Marianas Trench show the other day, and I got to go. Not only did I get to go, but I had some amazing experiences. I talked to Matt (guitarist) and Mike (bassist) right away, because they're cool and work the merch table. Haha. They were UNBELIEVABLY nice! I'll never forget when Mike gave me that dazzling smile.... *reminisces.*
The actual music was incredible. They put on a fantastic live show -- my favourite part was probably when they performed Masterpiece Theatre III, a six minute track from their new CD that's like a grand finale of their music. It takes lines from other songs and is layered with tons of vocals. All four guys in the band are incredible singers! I was enchanted by their performance.
At the end, the lead, Josh, announced that the band would go to the back and people could come meet them. The place cleared out sooo fast. I was already only three people from the guard rail, but I rushed up and stood right at it when people started leaving. I'm smart like that. Mike leaned over and gave the girl next to me a pick. I said, "Mike, Mike, I'm on the Mission!" (The Mission is the street team that really, really got the ball rolling on getting them radio play.) "Oh you're on the Mission?" So he walks away, comes back, and hands me the setlist!
I talked to Matt and Mike again, got hugs, pictures, etc, and then ran over to talk to Ian, the drummer. "Ian, I'm from the Mission." "Yeah? Hey, you're Shanae! Shanae... Shanae Something! I saw your name on the guest list and thought, 'What a nice black girl name.'" Me and Ian had some good times. I asked him if he'd get naked for Jesus (inside joke... he asked a fan that once) and we laughed VERY hard. Ian was extremely nice and hilarious.
Last on the list was Josh. I talked to him for a bit about random stuff, and while my friend was taking a picture with him, I asked, "Was it more intimidating to work with Greig Nori or Raine Maida?" "Raine. Actually, Raine wasn't intimidating... RAINE IS AWESOME ON THE NUNCHUCKS! He's like... *kung-fu noises/actions*. Yeah! But no, Raine's hilaaarious!" "Really? I wouldn't guess..." "No, he's so funny. But yeah, you wouldn't think so because he's real artsy and is like, 'I AM DEEP,' but no, he's so funny. We actually got to hang out with him for a few days before recording, and for three days I didn't know he had a sense of humor. He's the kind of guy that says everything with a straight face. But yeah, Raine's a goof!"

At least you called the cops! Can you take out a restraining order on him or something? He'll have to move if you do!

When I was talking to Mike, I said, "Oh yeah, people ask me who Marianas Trench is, and I say, 'They're a band that likes to break out into harmonies!'" He laughed at me and yelled, "Laa-laa-laaaa!"
But yes, they're a pop-rock band that has their share of great harmonies. Seriously, they're awesome.

that's so scary dom

maybe you should consider moving? the place you're in just doesn't sound worth it

ugh, it's just this one guy who fucks everything up. i don't know if i already said it, but they found my camera in his house and my neighbour found my wallet on her front lawn this morning. everything was still in it. i bet he was pissed off that there was no cash in there. hah. but yeeeah, i'm not too worried about it right now. my parents are coming tomorrow to pick me up to go home for easter and to put a lock on my door (that i can lock from the outside). sooo yeah, i'm hoping he stays away. if not, i'll get a restraining order and i'll call my landlord once i figure out what's going on.
oh and claire, i COULD move, but you have to remember that i live in scarborough. i live in the safest area possible, so there's not much else i can do. i just got stuck with shitty people moving in downstairs.

Dommmmmmmmmmmmm you need even more hugs than you've already gotten in here. *hugs* You should look into the restraining order thing, that's a good idea!
Shanae! I'm so glad to hear your concert was so much fun!
That was your first ever, right?

This makes me happy because Raine scares the crap out of me. At my first and only OLP show I was 15, and afterwards I went out back and met the band and all that. Duncan and Steve signed, but when I got to Raine he'd just started heading back towards the tour bus. I stood there awkwardly, deciding if I should call after him, or run up to him, or what. Then he turned around and gave me a, "hello, creepy little boy who is staring at me" look of confusion. And then he came over and asked if I wanted stuff signed, blah blah blah.
The point is, Raine's very nice, but he scares the crap out of me and my 15-year-old awkwardness didn't help.
I just wanna get out,
Stuck inside of this.

Annie, lots of their stuff is just pure poppy rockish songs, but if you want to go for harmonies, I suggest Masterpiece Theatre III, in all of its glorious weirdness. That, and Decided To Break It. I remember in an interview, they sang good vibrations a capella.
I find Raine really, really intimidating, too. It's one of the reasons why I asked the question (and I enjoy hearing musicians I love talk about other musicians I love). If I met Raine, I'd feel rather uncomfortable and wouldn't know what to say. With Marianas Trench, they're ridiculously friendly and hilarious, so I was quite comfortable. It did take courage to ask Ian if he'd get naked for Jesus, after all!

A capella is pretty much my heart's joy. Do they ever do that on cds?
I actually spend so much time listening to a capella or otherwise harmony-rich music. There's an obscene amount of Rajaton, Sarah Slean, Mamas and the Papas, and youth choir music on my iPod. I think lack of interesting harmony-lines is the thing that most depresses me about much of today's music.

They used to do covers of So It Goes and things like that at concerts, but they don't do that anymore now that they have two CDs out.
Uhhh, they only really go into intense harmonies in Masterpiece Theatre I and Masterpiece Theatre III, and add a pop aspect to harmonies on Decided to Break It.
For your viewing pleasure, here's them doing Good Vibrations.

They actually start singing at 2:30.
I remember on MuchOnDemand, Matt and Josh sang a song to Tim Deegan about him getting his appendix removed. Hahaha... MEMORIES.

You guys like harmonies, eh? I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record around here, but darn it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHNwarRwfPE
(Harmony practices at beginning, then again at 4:00ish.)
And a song of theirs that utilizes harmonies better than probably any other:

Whee.
