On the subject of plane crashes it's kinda weird ..

When I lived back in Tiffin (Miles from a simple county airport) I would have recurring dreams of a cesna making a crash landing in the field out back.

Now I live across the street from a an airport that handles quite a bit of private jets. I've yet to see any close calls and I can't say I've had a dream about a plane crash in the 5 some years I've been here.

Actually I take that back there was 1 plane crash a year back or so ago that was about a mile or two away.

what i dont really understand about this horrific act is the reaction to increase security not only on greyhounds but city busses alike. The reaction of society to a disturbing, once in a lifetime event is odd. Certainly if the man did not have the 'rambo' knife he could not have beheaded the guy, but I highly doubt that other means for expelling his anger/psychosis would not be found. What I am trying to say is that more security would not change the person who is going to perform cannibalistic behaviours.

the thought of being randomly attacked and horribly mutilated all of a sudden and in a public place is terrifying. the reaction, i think, comes from people realizing that such a thing is actually possible, whereas it wasn't given conscious consideration before. people would've reacted the same way had this happened in a building elevator or a restaurant or something.

I agree with you Christine. There were people on Matt's blog saying they'd never get on a Greyhound bus again, but I'm sure they'd be much safer on one that walking down the street. Yes, it was a horrible thing, but it just so happened to take place on a bus. I mean, people sometimes carry out attacks like that on busy streets - people wouldn't be saying they'd never walk down a street again because of it, would they?
Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.

And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.

most murders take place in people's houses, whether it's their own or the murderer's. Are people to begin living only in tents!?

I'll say this again for the gajillionth time today.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!?

Is it really worth someone's life to save some money? I don't understand how some people's minds work.

I hope they identify every single one of those people on security cameras and charge them with murder. I read about that earlier and I'm absolutely disgusted.

I did survive. This was the most intense Black Friday (Walmart term is "Blitz") that I have ever been through. Not that the crowd in my store was out of hand, but the sheer volume of people in the building was amazing. The crowd at my store was pretty well behaved, and most of our overnight stockers are vocal enough to tell people to back off and actually have them listen. I actually worked overnight to organize the event and insisted that we do some things in the interest of safety for our customers and associates. Our TV's were not located inside the store, rather in a trailer outside. We sat a table up with number sheets and handed them out to customers in a line. From there the customers went to pay, and then drove around the building where associates waited to load the TV's for them. My store is 204,000 sq. ft. in size with a huge parking lot. When I left at 7am the entire lot was full, and customers were parking behind the store and on the grass. We ended up with the highest volume day in the store's history.

As for the poor man who was killed in Long Island, we all felt extremely bad for him. We had no customer or associate accidents for the day, which was a huge blessing. The likelihood of being able to determine who killed that man is very low. I hope that someone is able to be held accountable for it.

Sounds like you did a great job, Matt! The TV thing was a really good idea.

The numbered sheets was an idea that we have used many times, but abandoned last year at Walmart's direction. The result was my co-manager, who stands at an impressive 5'4", nearly being smushed amongst a crowd of shoppers dying to get their hands on TV's. This year she was safe and sound.

I'm glad your store has things organized - it definitely seems like the best way to minimize risk of injury.
