Did punk rock get it right?

I'm going to listen to it again tonight. My first impression was that there was no forward progression, but I'm sure another listen will change my mind. Regardless of whether the music advanced or not, it's still beautiful and well crafted.

After taking a good thourough listen, I still don't see a lot of forward progression. The only thing I noticed different was that the guitar is a lot more noticeable. The drumming is somewhat different too, and I can't think of how to word what has changed about them (the drum parts). The music and words still sound great, but I'm not convinced they have made another album that is truly different from their previous work.

I'm listening now. I'm only on track 5, but it doesn't sound groundbreaking for them. It's not bad in any way... just nothing exciting and new.

I really like "Fix You", though.

lol they explained this yesterday on MTV somewhere over here ;)

In one week time I´m going to see Coldplay live in Cologne
With Richard Ashcroft as a support act, to be honest, bitter sweet symphony is the only song I know from him (his band the verve) by name :wtf: I should go and listen to some more music now... *shameonme*

I have 2 tickets to see Coldplay in September. <3

I love X & Y. It's beautiful, and that is all I expect from Coldplay. Brilliant, well planned out, organized and beautiful music.

He probably won't play Verve stuff (though I could be wrong), but Urban Hymns is a great album (it's the one with Bittersweet Symphony on it) if you wanna check out more of his/their stuff.

I haven't heard any of his solo stuff.

Well well well... I was right. Take that!

FROM THE LAST CD BOUGHT THREAD. I figured I'd carry the convo over to here:

I've only heard the live versions of the songs (well, parts of most of them), and I agree. I was saying to Melissa how they don't sound like they've progressed at all through their albums.

That's a common theme among early Coldplay listening. When I first heard "A Rush of Blood..." I didn't hear much of a growth. But there actually was. Their sound got a lot fuller and majestic. "Parachutes" was an overall quiet album. Felt very sparse. If there was no "A Rush of Blood..." and "X&Y" had been released after "Parachutes," people would be wondering what the hell happened to the band, because "X&Y" certainly doesn't sound much like "Parachutes" at all.

And "X&Y" does sound quite a bit different from the last album, too. They've gotten even grander with their sound, and there definitely seems to be more uptempo songs and "riffage" on a lot of songs that was kind of missing from the last two albums (save "Shiver" and some others). That's really the only way a band like Coldplay can progress, unless they go the way of Radiohead. And they tried that, but killed those sessions in favor of what would become this album anyway, where they're going in more of a U2 direction.

The real problem with the album is that there isn't anything that grabs you. If there were a few songs on here that really grabbed my attention, I would be shouting "OMG! This album is so different and so good!" Usually there have been a few songs on the other albums that are so good that it makes the rest of the songs around them seem better. Not so really this time around. They're all good songs, but there's just not a song that made me go "Okay, this is one of the best songs I've heard in awhile." In fact, I would say my early favorite is that Johnny Cash tune, and it (surprise!) goes back to their more simplistic sound. Anyone even know the story with that song? Was it written for Johnny? Did he write it for them? Were they going to duet? Was it a tribute type of thing? I know there's some sort of connection.

Anyway, yeah, I'd give the album a middle of the road B grade.

That's exactly how I feel about it. EXACTLY. ^5

I really like that song, and I love "Fix You"... but other than that, it's the kind of album I'd put on as background music while I'm doing something and not really pay much attention to.

Oh, and I might be wrong, but I believe they wrote it for Johnny Cash to sing. I was only half paying attention (maybe Melissa caught it), but they talked about it on the MTV Live Leak... I actually didn't even hear them say Johnny Cash's name, and was wondering who they were talking about. But they were saying how he never got to record it and they didn't want it to go to waste, so they did it.

What's really weird is I could swear I'd heard the song before the first time I heard it (when they played it after talking about it). :freak: That always freaks me out.

I definitely noticed that the guitar parts are more prominent in the music now. I didn't really like the drums for the album. I agree with Nikki, it's more background type music for me, or something I want to put on to relax and de-stress. But otherwise there isn't a whole lot that just makes you go "wow!" I've never given Parachutes a thourough listen, so maybe I will revist that album on my day off and hopefully that will help me appreciate X & Y better. Rush of Blood, however, is a very solid album with lots of great songs that I can listen to over and over. But hey it's all still better than a lot of other crap for your ears music on the radio.
