Waking Life

Postby Axtech » 11/13/2003, 4:14 pm

We're watching Waking Life in philosophy right now. If you're into philosophical questions and answers, you should definately see if you can find it.

The whole point of the movie is to look at (among innumerable other things) is "Are we sleep-walking through waking life, or wake-walking through sleeping life?"

The movie was filmed with a digital camera, then a team of artists created artwork over the film. As well as looking amazing anyways, they often put things in the film that accentuate what is being said at the time.

Waking Life revolves around an unnamed man who is presumably in his early twenties. He goes around, jumping from scene to scene, and from conversation to conversation. We never know what he is dreaming or what is real. Each conversation is with someone who is, in actuality, just talking about their most passionate philosophical subject (most is unscripted). Each conversation is filled with profound ideas and theories that make you question both what's happening in the movie and in your own life.

The movie might (will) seem extremely confusing at first. However, once you get used to the style, it's simply amazing.

We're finishing the movie tomorrow, and I hope to find somewhere that carries it to buy it on Sunday (or perhaps I'll wait until next week, depending on my work load).

Has anyone else seen this?

Definately the best movie you will ever watch in class.

But be prepared for the people in your class to say things like "That's stupid." "It doesn't make any sense." "I don't get it." "Can we stop watching this?" etc...

For anyone interested...

This is the official site. Check it out. It's got some clips and stuff:

http://www.wakinglifemovie.com

This is an unofficial site. It's really good if you want to read some of the conversations. Take a look at it too, but ignore the site-owner's "Two Cents":

http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gte484v/wakinglife.html

I suggest reading Bill Wise (the boat car guy), Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke (on many things), John Christensen (on dreams) and Speed Levitch (try reading it with a really high pitched voice, and you'll be in character)

i've seen it..
interesting movie, to say the least...pretty brilliant, too. sad thing is, i didn't get it the time that i watched it...i was tired when i watched it during the summer, so my thinking wasn't up to par (it being summer, and me being tired), and a lot went right over my head. i wish i would have paid more attention to it. i'm contemplating going out and hunting it down again.

but. yes. it's..interesting. not a no brainer by any means, which is definitely a nice change.

i've seen it, twice. the first time i was high (what better movie to watch while stoned?), and i thought it was cool so i watched it again.

i actually thought it was more then a little pretentious more then a little bit of the time. it was, obviously, visually stunning, but some of the conversations were nothing more then a lot of noise without actually saying anything.

such is the nature of metaphysics, unfortunately.

sounds intriguing

"The white dove is gone, the one world has come down hard, so why not share the pain of our problems, when all around are wrong ways, when all around is hurt, i'll roll up in an odd shape and wait, untill the tide has turned.....with anger, i'm dead weight, i'm anchored"- IME, God Rocket (Into the Heart of Las Vegas) ^ Some say this song is about a terrorists thoughts before 911

"Pray for the sheep" Matt Good
"But it's alright, take the world and make it yours again" Matt Good

I felt it in the wind, and i saw it in the sky, i thought it was the end, i thought it was the 4th of July.

You're crazy for taking the workload, but lucky to be around intellectual equals (or at least close to it).

Better than people who know they aren't intelligent, but still feel the need to grace the class with their own brand of insight and wit.
