so i'm applying for a spot on my campus' radio show as a DJ. i think i'd do a pretty sweet job. however, my show proposal needs to be super creative. i have tons of different music i'd love to play, but my proposal needs to be specific.

a couple of the ones this year...
remix show (anything BUT the original version of the song)
top 10 lists (of whatever they chose)

so i just need some sort of gimmick/theme. so if you have any ideas.. i'd love to hear them

You could do a six degrees of seperation type show - pick two apparently unrelated songs and connect them (artist A collaborated with artist B who covered artist C who went to high school with artist D, etc.)

Or you could do a 'comeback' show - all the artists who have resumed careers after an interval, or never stopped making music, but are usually associated with a previous generation of stars.

Every morning show has a "Wacky News" segment ripped from the headlines of Fark.

the six degrees one is actually one i had been thinking about. but filling a whole years worth of that for my show would require a lot of extra time i think.

i like the comeback show idea. or something like a "now and then" show.

thanks for the ideas :)

i used stuff like six degrees of seperation a lot when i was doing my radio show. it was fun, though you're right, after a while it took a bit of effort to keep things interesting (at least for myself)

Totally not related to music, but my buddy ran a movie show on campus radio and ended up getting pretty primped. He was sent free DVD's all the time, free movie passes to 'review', a new job marketing with a movie company.

Anyways, my advice is go with what you know and what you like. Be able to play your favourite bands and exposed to new ones. Also, it doesn't have to be like a huge theme where every song fits some episode theme. You could just like.... suggest a metal show where you play old and new metal for an hour or something. (substitute metal for whatever genre )

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire

(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

Exactly. The six degrees of separation idea is very very cool but all you really have to do is just look at what exists there now and find a niche that hasn't been filled yet. I mean, look at punkorama on The Edge, it isn't anything groundbreaking. Just an hour every thursday night where they play and talk about nothing but punk rock.

oh, and while you might want to start with a cool gimmick/theme to get in...after you've done a few shows, you can change it up and usually the station managers won't notice/care since it's just a campus show. at least, that's what i found :P

one of my fave things to do was to make a mixed tape of one song by as many different artists as possible. This might be hard for an entire year but could be a couple of shows. Obviously you have to find classic songs that have withstood the test of time. It is amazing what you can dig up and how different a song can be. Sort of like the tribute album idea. Actually you could do that too but do it for one band at a time. Pick a band and see how many of their songs you can compile that were covered by others.
