are they actually any good? I thought they were all hype, but now i'm starting to think i might actually like them. I thought the same thing about the Vines too, and ended up loving them. But i'm scared it'll turn into another Strokes situation andi'll end up bored and $20 poorer

I listened through some of their stuff once. Here is what I remember.

A chic who can't play drums. A guy who doesn't bring anything original to guitar. Poorly produced recordings. Boring songs.

But now I have to run.

I've never been a white stripes fan. They had a couple good singles that I enjoyed but they just never appealed to me. I think that the way they make records and the fact they are a two piece band is what makes them stand out so much. I say download a couple non-singles and see what they're like.

Also, the Strokes are a band that you have to listen to quite a bit to catch on to. I first heard Is This It? and thought it was crap. All the songs sounded the same to me, but now it's one of my favourite albums.

:uh:

I've never known anyone who apparently hates them as much as I do. That's just amazing. *still in shock*

wat to say about the white stripes. lets see, when i heard fell in love with a girl, i loved it because it sounded so stripped. and then i found out all their songs were like that. because that was all they could do. because they suck. the girls an idiot drummer who thinks shes hot shit, the guys an idiot guitar player who knows all of 3 chords and has great difficulty doing any melodies. and the singing? please, kil me now. so yeah, go white stripes! not.

I guess I have to be the guy that defends real music, like always.

So there's a complaint that Jack White brings nothing new to the guitar, and it's true, he doesn't. No one does. Everything that can be done on the guitar has been done. Over and over again. There's not going to be some guy who invents new chords and an insanely different way to play the guitar. I just get a kick out of the fact that Jack White is apparently a boring guitarist when you people find solace in OLP, with their samey guitar riffs, half-assed lyrics, and attempted melodies.

Yeah, Meg White sucks at the drums. That's the truth. But let's all wake up now. They're trying to showcase off the insane guitar solos and the emotion in Jack's vocals, now how well Meg can keep up that 4x4 beat. All she is there to do is give the song some rhythm, not blow our minds with jazz-inspired cock-rock drum solo. She keeps the rhythm, therefore, she does her job perfectly fine.

The sad thing is, the White Stripes aren't anything new, they're just better than most of the stuff you call music.

If you're looking for something hard to listen to and complex with new things on the guitar that you haven't heard before, go ask Josh for a recommendation, I'd like to know what's out there. Your best bet for music he describes would be Swedish death metal, so if that's what you want, go with his word.

If you want blues-inspired rock music with some of the craziest vocals in music, listen to the White Stripes. If you want four great albums of catchy tunes that are actually worth listening to, buy a White Stripes album. It will do you some good.

 I Love The White Stripes. I'm not getting into semantics of what they should be doing better, Yeah they're not perfect. I dont give a shit, if you're into music because you want perfection, You're not into the music. I like the lyrics, I like the Noise. Its good to me. Its Real.

When I heard them, I was sad to find that they reminded me somewhat of Led Zeppelin. Because I like Led Zeppelin quite a bit. It wouldn't be so hard for me to think of The White Stripes something like . . . Led Zeppelin today, had John Bonham not died in 1980. They're like that 20th studio album, that just isn't as good as the first 5 were. Why isn't the 20th album good? Probably because you're getting tired of the same songs that were on the first 5 perfectly good albums. I think this is why some people like The White Stripes. It isn't like other music that is being made these days. It's more like something from the 70's, and I have a hunch that if they had been around back then, they would have had a lot more trouble getting anyone's attention.

And Alan, you're right about OLP, at least as of late. And it's true, not all of the guitarists I like are what I would call original, I was slightly out of line with that comment and had to leave for dinner.

My recommendation certainly wouldn't be death metal, I was forced to listen to way more metal than I wanted to last year. It is crap, repetitive crap. I would more likely suggest Radiohead, they're a pretty talented group that tries to find original sounds. I believe that Radiohead deserves all of the attention they've received over the years, and that The White Stripes does not.

But anyway, this is silly.

OK, Radiohead. Don't get me wrong, I love them and all, but don't you think their last four albums have essentially been the same? OK Computer was amazing. I couldn't stop listening to it when it came out and I still listen to it today. It pushed the boundaries of what normal pop music was like. Then Kid A came out, had the same feel as OK Computer, but was still an amazing album. In fact, I like Kid A more than OK Computer.

Then Amnesiac came out. Then Hail To The Theif. Nothing really changed. Everything in these past four albums have had the same feel to it. Lots of odd sounds, a whole lot of indescernable lyrics, and a guitar solo here and there. Different from most other music? Yes. Different from anything they've done before? Not so much.

OK musical geniuses, you try to produce different sounds from just a guitar and a drum set. Yes, the singles tend to sound the same, because that's what the people want. Listen to other songs, and you'll find blues songs, acoustic songs, songs with just Jack playing, and things of the sort. I don't know what you expect when there's only two people in a band.

Well, it doesn't happen very often. Damnit. I blew my once-a-month chance to bask in the glory of people agreeing with my asshole opinions.

You can't blame me for thinking that conversations in a White Stripes thread was about the White Stripes.

Theres nothing asshole about thinking the white stripes are decent. Thats just the truth.

Personally I find them to be a band that grates on me. i haven't seen the talent a lot of people talk about, and songs like "Hotel Yorba" only seem to prove it to me. I have never listened to all their material so I feel like I can't comment about all of it. The songs I have heard don't really draw me in. People say what a good guitar player Jack is.........uhhh, okay, I guess he's decent. and Meg can't drum well. keeping a beat is about the easiest thing to do as a drummer. She can do that........and that's it.

I liked "Fell in Love with a Girl" and didn't mind "Seven Nation Army"....but "Hardest Button to Button" and "Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground" made me want to jump off a bridge.

That's my feelings on the White Stripes.

Yep.

Anyways, all Meg does is keep a beat. We know that. It's supposed to just showcase the stripped feeling of old rock music. Let me beat this into the ground some more.

Yeah, Jack's just good at guitar. Last time I checked, he's probably better at the guitar than any other musician you listen to, short of old blues music or Led Zeppelin. That's all I have to say.
