Q: I am a single father raising two teenage boys. About a year ago, my sons returned from a weekend trip to find me masturbating in the jacuzzi. Recently, they came to me and asked me if I masturbated. I told them that I did and that it was perfectly normal for men to do so. Now my sons have jumped head-first into candid questions, and the other night on my way to the bathroom, I passed by the living room and found both of them masturbating to some porn they had snuck from my closet. I quietly made my bathroom trip and returned to my bed. Do I just start passing out the porn and giving technique advice? Is it okay to let them masturbate together? I want to be open, but how open?

A: Discussing masturbation openly with your sons is admirable. I'd leave whether or not they masturbate together entirely up to them. Many brothers do so while growing up, and in most cases this in itself does not become a problem. Actively providing pornography to underage persons may be technically illegal, but tacitly allowing your sons access to erotic materials in the privacy of your home is really no one else's business. You might caution them that pornography is often not a realistic portrayal of sex; at the same time, many folks learn something about the realities of human sexuality from viewing pornography. By communicating honestly on these subjects, both your sons, and you, will benefit.
