I'm just curious to hear your guys' opinions on it. Personally, I'm not against it. If two people are in love and want to be married, then I say go for it.

i think its just another church vs. state issue. and eventualy it will die out. i am personaly not against it, but my parents are fanatical against it. which surprises me because they're not very religious. bah...

and if i can quote matt good

"If you believe that God is responsible for us all, then God doesn't make mistakes. And if you believe that God does make mistakes, what's to say that you're not one of them?"

hum. I remember a topic like this I think. anyway...

I have had a lot of discussions about this topic. It has come up in Global Issues class, we had a day and a half long debate about it in youth parliment (which I ended up haveing to change my opinion on because of stupid clauses... ) and concidering the fact that my dad is a lawyer suing the catholic church for the whole "alter boys" incident. Lots of discussions there. And my Step-Sister is a lesbien. so Yay. I know my shit.

My opinion? Yeah, Same-sex marriges should be allowed. Its a right that people should have. In a time where same-sex relationships are celebrated not frowned upon, then we should accept them into legal marrage.

Its when people start making the arguement "But love is love" that people start arguing back. With that philosphy then a Mother who loves her son should marry him. So incest is brought into the mix. And for the sake of it, lets make it more fun. How about polygamy? If love is love and three people love each other then they should get married! right? no. Sorry, the world doesnt work that way.

The only reason we are even concidering same sex marriges is because they are socally accepted for a large percentage of the population. Plus, its a right that could be granted to this group of people. We are not saying that the church has to preform these marriges because the state can do that. If its agains your belifes then don't marry them. Simple as that. But at some point it should be allowed. And what the hell does socity know about right and wrong anyway? If I am not mistaken it was a huge fight for womans rights at the turn of the century that was only won about 30-40 years later. Many people were agains giving women rights but it turned out for the better. So even if you disagree, you may not be right. We are fighting for freedoms, not prejudices.

Yeah, thats my piece. I have more if anyone wants to argue.

There is also the whole legal side of things that can be argued but thats just boring.

i'm for the marrages, personally.

but i get so confused at how, gays and lesbians want to be "married". its like the church(s) have always had marrages, it's their "thing". and most religion considers gay/lesbian ways as a sin. so why, would you want a 'marrage' when its origin is from the church that sees what their sexual preference is as a sin. If i were in that situation, i would rather have a civil union or whatever, then to be somewhat associated with something that doesn't apporve of the lifestyle, so long as it is the states equal to what the church is. even a state issued marrage is a reflective of the church itself.

lets see if i make sense.

Gay people want to be treated the same as the rest of us, and therefore want to be married, just like anyone else. And they should be allowed to. The people who are against it wouldn't be affected in any way (especially since they obviously don't know any gay people, cos if they did they certainly wouldn't be against it), so they should just mind their own business.

And, may I just add... I hate George W. Bush. A lot. :cuss:

i don't think marrige is really the big deal, maybe i'm wrong, but i think the real thing is they want the legal benefits of marrige

Legal benefits are an important issue. If your partner dies, does not have a will, and your not legally married your not entitled to his/her property.
It's discrimination is what it is. This is an abomination on civil rights. It's like the 20s or something.
Oh well, Bush is just getting another general group of people to hate him, so that works for me.

PS
The constitutional amendement will never pass.
A: It's hard enough to pass an amendment as it is
B: No one is going to pass an amendment that is a step backwards in civil rights.

I very much support gay marriage. It's an issue that really interests me. I'm disgusted with the fact that Bush wants to amend the constitution to deny their right to marriage. It's incredibly sad that people with different sexual preference can't be treated the same as heterosexual couples.

I'm against it. You're not completely alone. Mine is a religious belief so it's really not worth arguing in this thread. But...

If love is love and three people love each other then they should get married! right? no. Sorry, the world doesnt work that way.

It's not about THREE people loving eachother, that is a common misperception. Mormons were persecuted and run out of the fucking country for their practice. If gay marriage is allowed, then I think polygamy should be too.

Yeah but that doesn't mean I don't get how the world views it. I haven't been stuck here forever you know.

I think Bush needs to crawl out of his fucking HOLE, quite personally, and realize that with time our country needs to "roll with the punches". Saying that marriage is defined as "the union of man & woman" is like saying that we shouldn't allow any religion other than Protestants or any skin color other than whites into our country.

I'm so FOR gay marriage. How can somebody honestly want to pass a constitutional amendment to ban the unity of two people???? Two gay people are just like a man/woman couple. There is no freakin difference.

I have a cousin who is a lesbian, and her girlfriend is one of the most kick ass people I've ever met. I think its amazing, what they have. Of course, not my "style", but sheesh - crawl out of your shantys and realize that this is 2004 and not 1804.
