lol, sorry but i was listening to it and couldn't help myself, i thought maybe if i didn't use the bands name people might give it a better chance, i think people have some sort of stigma against them

it's really hard to say, it all depends on personal taste. WHat bands do you like?

well.... mostly stuff that's completely uncompareable to ime, but normal alternative bands i like include olp, smashing pumpkins, and matt good if that helps at all. I also have some sort of biased telling me to go with blue green orange....
my only question right now is: does the stuff from the edwin days sound anything like edwin solo (or at least his solo singles)?

Well if your going to go with Edwins stuff, get "scenery and the fish". It's quite a bit like his solo stuff, just with better guitar work and much longer songs.
Blue Green Orange is definatly IME's most origanal album, it can't really be compared to anyone elses. It's hard, soft, funky, dark, and fun. BUT some people are put off by Brian's voice.(he doesn't enunciate, instead it all flows at times)
And TQMD is by far the most Prog rockish, Brian's voice is amazing on it. And if your into art rock or prog rock. (like a more mature version of SM, or kinda like a less dark version of APC.)
So yeah, the only thing to keep in mind is give all of the newer albums time to grow on you, there's going to be songs on them that you don't like at first. But i found them to be my favorite after time.
Here's a list to help you decide:
Scenery: One More Astronaut, Another Sunday, Earth, Sky & C.
BGO: When did you get back from mars?, Summtime in the Void, Love Your Starfish.
The Quicksilver Meat Dream: Like the Sun, Hell & Malfunction (it has a spoken word intro), No Coma.
those are good example of songs from each.
PS back to your edwin question Scenery sonds like new Edwin , DIG DOES NOT. Dig is alot harder and almost sounds at time like a MUCH more talented Metallica
