its a light trick
take two of the same shade of grey and surround one by a darker hue and the other by a lighter hue and the two that were the same will appear different.
thats all he's doing

they're the same! that's awesome.
i covered everything around them by a piece of paper and ripped a little hole in the paper where both checkers are and the colour looks the same.

i just did the paper thing, with holes for the 2 squares. they were still.... slightly different. lol

I bought a book about optical illusions and this one is in there. It's pretty cool and yes they are both the same.
