the most depressing/suicidal/addict related song ever written? i think so......
oh and a tip, if your downloading, get the Nine Inch Nails one, by trent Reznor...NOT the Johny Cash one.......why the hell was Johny Cash listening to NIN in the first place? Let alone covering them? I love how he says "Crown of Thorns" instead of "Crown of SHIT!"

You like Johnny Cash's religious references he has in many songs!?!?

Alright.

But yeah Johnny Cash is pretty damn awesome.

The Johnny Cash version of the song is so much better than the Trent Reznor version. Cash blew me away with it.

Did you hear the Cash version? It sounds so amazing. Yes, I love NIN and I love seeing them live, not to mention that I love seeing Trent sing it himself, but come on. Johnny Cash sang the song the way it was meant to be sung.

I agree with Alan, his version is amazing. The power of that song is incredible. Have you seen the video for it? It makes me cry.

It's a very powerful video, but it really creeps me out... especially with his late wife standing there in the background (who passed away a few months after the video was shot)

pffft....Johny Cash's sounded like a 90 year old man singing it, and like we're going to take his drug abuse and depression seriously. It sounds like he can barely sing with his wavering 70 year old voice. And no i don't like "crown of thorns" i thought it was funny how he was to old and conservitive to say SHIT

Besides you can hear SOOOOOOO much emotion in the trent version, it's sounds like he's on the verge of a break down

Yeah, well Conor Oberst cries in his songs, that doesn't make them any better.

Face it, Johnny Cash dominates the song Hurt. Just because he doesn't sound like a kid anymore doesn't make the song worse, if anything, it's better. That song was great to begin with, but now a legend sings it and makes it that much better.

It has nothing to do with old and conservative. If you see the movie THE HUNTED with Tommy Lee Jones, they start with Cash talking and end with him talking. Reading things from the Bible. He has more songs with Religious references too.

"Hurt" is given an actual new dimension because of the fact that it IS Cash singing it; a man who was addicted to drugs for 20 or so years, a man that can barely see, walk, or breathe at times; someone who has been in the hospital, and someone who isn't willing to stop, because as he told Rolling Stone, "I'm like a shark. I'll die if I stand still." He's seen friends come and go in the music business, and in life, for fifty years... from Elvis to Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Meanwhile, what has Trent Reznor been through that could even fractionally compare to Cash's life? No matter how much Trent has gone through, he's dealt with less of a decay than Cash has dealt with.

And besides, changing "shit" to "thorns" means little when you're the man that sang "I once shot a man in Reno/just to see him die." When you're the man that recorded a live album on a tiny stage in a tiny room with a thousand inmates, with no protective barrier between you and them.

Johnny Cash has done everything -- a few times over, too, I may add. He has seen it all, so his version is almost more truthful, because he knows what it really is to be "Hurt".

lol sorry, i just got the whole "old person/country" vibe from him, i'm ignorant to his past and music, i appologise. Trents wife did die shortly before the song came out though, and he has had alot of drug problems......and he DID right it so don't give Johny too much credit, let remember who's covering who

Well, the video by Cash hits you too. It highlights his wife, who died a couple weeks after it was shot. And the way he sings it just blows my mind. He did a better job than Trent did. I'm sorry, but it's true.

that video is simply the most amazing video ever. it captures all of cash's moments in life...and while all of u are argueing about the quality of the cover... u must remember Reznor had to give him permission to sing it... so that means he knew that Johnny would do an amazing version of it cause you dont let someone cover your song if they're gonna f*ck it up
