When Good Words Go Bad

Something that really annoys me is when people try to use "big" words that they don't know or understand, just to look smart. Then, when they fuck the word up, they just look even dumber.

For example...

"Hence the reason for..."

Okay, it's just hence. "Hence" means "this is the reason for". So, by saying that, one is saying "This is the reason for the reason for...".

Then there's people who have no clue what they're talking about. A guy in one of my classes once said (about writing lengthy code):

"I hate doing this motononous work."

Wow, way to butcher a good word... I mean, it's like he actually read it in a dictionary the night before, and then just pronounced it wrong.

You know what's even more annoying? When people think that someone has a really high intelligence just because they use these "big words".

Here's a direct quote from a girl in my psych class about Mr "Motononous" up there...

"You're really smart. Like, you use all those big words all the time."

FUCK! He's a moron! He just impresses people with "big" words. Go pick up a frigging dictionary, moron!

Even worse, this same guy (again) impresses teachers by using the thesaurus in Word, so that his papers sound more professional. I've seen him do it.

People really need to learn the english language.

Now, I'm not saying that I'm perfect in any way. Far from it, in fact. But people really need to make more of an effort...

 not if i don't use big words first!

.... actually I've gotten the whole "you use big words" thing enough. As much as I try to use big words, I can't agree with people who tell me that.

and rob: don't diss the Word thesaurus. its saved my life a good number of times.

i like to use diction such that my vociferations are elongated, which, although often results in my peers becoming discombobulated, heightens my appearance of intellect.

uck. orwell would hate me for that.

I use it too, to avoid repetition (wow, look at that big word! I must be a genious!!!1one), but this guy used it way too much, and then got praise for his word choice...

"Listen, this is not my real job. I'm an air traffic controller. If you hit me in the eye, I hope it's you who gets on a plane tomorrow." - Raine Maida, to an agitated crowd at a live show when a bottle was thrown at him.

I like just using "Thus" it's small enough to not be a big word but has an intelligent feel to it
