Subject: Support Affirmative Action with Baked Goods!
***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***
Affirmative Action Bake Sale Hits UM Campus
Ann Arbor, MI 2/17/03
In protest of the University of Michigan's Affirmative Action admission
policies, The Michigan Review will be holding an "Affirmative Action Bake
Sale" in Angell Hall on the University's Ann Arbor campus. This sale will
feature muffins and bagels priced at $1.00 for white students (including
Asians and Middle Easterners) and $0.80 for underrepresented minorities
(including African-Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans). The sale
will begin at 8:30am, and will proceed until supplies are exhausted.
Editor-in-Chief, James Justin Wilson, is leading the charge at this bake
sale. "We're out here to tangibly prove to the student body that the
University's policies are unfair," says Wilson. "They disproportionately
disadvantage qualified applicants in seeking admission to higher education,
based solely upon race." He is not the only one to share such sentiments.
"To hand out 20% of the admission requirement, based solely on race, is
ridiculous. These policies imply that, as a minority, I am not qualified
enough, on my own merits, to be successful," claims LSA Junior, and Managing
Editor Ruben Duran.
The University's admissions system is based on a 150-point system, which
takes into account grade-point average, standardized test scores, and
various "non-academic" factors, awarding points to each. One-hundred points
are typically required to gain admission, but 20 of these points are awarded
to non-economically challenged minorities, thus assisting middle and
upper-middle class minority applicants only. Thus, these applicants only
need 80% of the points of non-minority competitors.
In order to clarify this of the admissions policy, the Review is offering
acquisition of a baked good to minority students for only 80% of the price
offered for white patrons.
In the several years preceding the high court's review of the Affirmative
Action lawsuits, the Review has been a stalwart and informed opponent of
racial preference policies. In light of this, the Review has posted an
online "admissions calculator" on its website. This calculator can be found
at:
http://www.michiganreview.com/admissions2.phpNote: A similar event has transpired on the University of California, Los
Angeles campus. It should be noted the UM event was planned long before the
one at UCLA.

I hate the affirmative action thing that U of M has going on. They need to get rid of it. There's no reason for a rich black kid to get into U of M over a white person. I watched kids at my school with 3.9's get turned away when they applied early, only because they're middle class or above and white. Doesn't anyone else think that a smart white kid gets shunned from the college of his or her choice for an underqualified minority?

If they don't want to discriminate, they just shouldn't ask what your ethnic background is on the application. Affirmative action is outdated and sucks.

Exactly. This would make sense if it were like the 1960s or 1970s when minorities were truly oppressed. They don't deserve a better chance than a typical "white" student now if they have the same opportunities that any other person in America has.
And another thing that needs to go. Title IX. Yeah, it was needed when there were no female sports. It can go to hell now. If I ever really want to play college tennis anywhere, I have to become one of the elite players in the nation. All the smaller schools are cutting it from their programs so they can make room for more women's clubs. If there is a sport that needs to be cut, it's always tennis that is the first to go. Look at Bowling Green. I think it was 1999 and they won their conference and were one of the top teams in the nation for tennis. The next year, they had to cut their team so they could keep funding football but have to add the mandatory women's hockey team. There is something seriously wrong with that. Why should the one thing I excell in be taken away from me because second rate womens sports can have funding? They need to change the rule that "Men's and women's sports need to have equal funding" when men have football, which costs a hell of a lot of money. Good college sports are suffering due to this outdated rule. It needs to be changed, and just maybe I can play at a small school like I wanted to.

Affirmative action is really a load of crap. They justifiy it with "lower -class citizens not having the same opportunities",etc. Well, I was taught that hard work pays off, yet this probes just the opposite. All of us middle-class white kids did some work maybe, but the minority always works harder. End of story.

After I railed on the Minority Peer Advisor, I don't think I'll be allowed back to an affirmative action discussion.

I don't see the point of affirmative action. Minorities complain so much about being unjustly rejected from certain schools. Wake up, your grades suck, therefore, you don't deserve to get into a top college. If they have such a problem with it and think the color of your skin is a ticket to a better college education, then why don't the minorities just go to one of those schools that only let people of that race into it? I don't see upper class white boys and girls complaining about not getting in there, and guess what, it's just as unfair as a minority getting rejected to U of M. If they keep affirmative action at U of M, the government sure as hell better abolish the "all black" universities like down in Georgia. I mean, it's fair, right? Why should a white kid from Georgia be rejected from a college education at Grambling because of the color of his skin?
Then there are the stupid rallies that every single college has. I hope that none of you think I am racist when I say this, I just get rather emotional when a topic I have feelings about comes up. At my school, the minorities that attend Oakland all rotate rooms and have meetings on why America is so oppressive to their respective minority, and why all white people are the devil. My friend Brian (who happens to be black) and I went to sit in on one of these meetings a few Fridays ago. I was kindly asked to leave as soon as I walked in, which is rather nice, right? Anyways, there was a meeting about how much these people are oppressed by white people, and the scariest thing is, all the people there seemed to actually believe they are oppressed. Come on, if these people are getting college educations, how oppressed can they possibly be? In most cases, the minorities that come to my school get scholarships and free dorm rooms, and yet they're oppressed. If they really feel they're being held down in society, why don't they move back to their native lands or something? Compared to how backwards some of the African and Asian countries are today, I don't see how they would have a problem living here where they can become extremely successful and have a comfortable life. People have it easy here, and yet all they do is bitch to get a certain law in place, then a year later, they bitch to get more added to the law. God, I am ranting, but it needs to be said. Sorry...

There's people of different races who will blatently talk about how much they hate our country. And yet they're reaping all the benefits. I say, if you hate it that bad, then go home.
I wish our country would change some things, but nothing is ever perfect. I come from a hard working family, and it's not fair to see what I've accomplished be handed to someone else.

affirmative action is rascist. title ix is sexist.
nobody under the sun can justify either of these things to me. why they are still around, i don't know.
the fact of the matter is, these policies are government mandated discrimination. no matter what kind of shine those silly liberals put on it, aa and ix discriminate. there is no other way around it.
there shouldn't even be a debate about it. at the core of the matter it's wrong and completely unjustifiable.

so you're saying African-Americans and Hispanics and Native Americans are underrepresented and Middle Easterners arent? Asians arent?
These people are discriminating too! bah!

Asians and Middle Easterners are not being underrepresented at my school. They don't count as a "minority"

Dearborn = Haven for Middle Easterners. Hah, a kid in my class made a joke about his brother - his brother broke the system at U of M - he's a white middleclass male. It's funny because it's true.

There's girl at my school who is Canadian through and through, middle-class, and of Afghan heritage. She is also an utter, utter idiotic airhead, who cheats and half-asses her way through school. But daily she yells how hard it is to be her and proclaims that she feels prejudiced racially and calls people ignorant all the bloody time. I hate this moron, but saying anything to her would be "racist", or course

She just plays the race card. I hate when people do that. It's a horrible excuse to slack off.
