It's rather derogatory to gay people then, when being gay is synomonous with being "profoundly uncool".

Although I do think sometimes some people go over board with it when a person is clearly not trying to be offenisve to anyone.

I work for a gay man, and it annoys him when "Gay" is used that way, he doesn't get really mad unless it's open gay bashing, but it does irritate him.

On the other hand because we're comfortable together, I can say "I feel gay listing to this" when he's playing Maddona, not because I feel bad, or because i feel dumb. Just that...I feel like a gay man listening to Maddona, lol nothing meant bad.


Ok that came out wrong and I'm sure I'll get jumped on for it, but keep in mind I work for a gay man, have gay friends, and am not homophobic.....just not good with words....

My bestest friend is gay, he encourages us to use it. But then again, I just think it sounds uneducated, and to me higher education is paramount, so I wouldn't say it and would probably think of a person who did say it as unintelligent.

No, don't worry, that didn't sound bad. Cos you didn't use the word in a negative way... you meant it in the stereotypical flamboyant way, and that's not really considered a negative thing in the gay community.

ok that's the point I'm trying to make, in some cases it acceptable if used as a joke, and teh person you're talking to understands that.

But in many casees it's mildy offensive, very offenisive to a few activisty types. Although I think if you're gay, and the worst thing you have to deal with is people using the word gay negatively you're pretty lucky.

that is pretty much what the article meant. he said if you're using it to refer to the people you still call faggots, i don't wanna meet you. but if you're using it the same way i did when i was 12 years old, then we can be friends.
