I didn't watch them, but I was stunned when I checked the results and saw that CRASH won best picture and best original screenplay!

It's such a great movie and Paul Haggis as proved two years in a row now that he's double kick-ass and one of the best screenwriters out there. Last year for Million Dollar Baby and now for Crash... And he's Canadian!

I was also stunned to see that Phillip Seymore Hoffman won best actor. He's an awesome actor and I always felt he was underrated because he always had the supporting roles in films. I haven't seen Capote yet, but I want to!

I was surprised by "It's Hard Out There For A Pimp" winning.

I don't care that it's a rap song.

I care that it's a horrible rap song, and it still won.

Then again, it wasn't up against much competition. Dolly Parton and some freaky people running away from a flaming car in slow motion...


George Clooney had the best acceptance speech of anyone (and his was first, of course). Comedy and a good message without a long list of pointless thank-yous = win.

Yeah his acceptance speech was brilliant. I can't say I was surprised about that song winning though. Sure it sucks, but you just had to know they were going to give recognition to that film somehow and that was the easiest way to do it.

I thought Jon Stewart was awesome hosting it. A little awkward at first, until the crowd warmed to him. He started out like he was playing to his own Daily Show audience (I think at one point he did his high pitched "mmm?"), but quickly adjusted. His video clips and smaller improvised jokes were great.



Also, why the hell did they cut off the acceptance speech from the best picture winners? Seriously. I understand that you have time constraints for everyone, but this was the biggest award, and the last award. It's not like her going overtime was going to cut down on anyone else's time. Plus, it made her speech seem unimportant when they cut her off, which is rediculous since it was for the biggest award. They could have at least not cut her off in the middle of a sentence...

As I said in the annoyance thread, I was really sad that Crash beat out Brokeback. Crash was good, but it was heavy-handed and melodramatic and insanely manipulative. Brokeback was just so beautiful - so tragically beautiful - and I definitely thought it deserved the award much more so than Crash. At least Ang Lee got best director.

I'm really really glad Brokeback didn't win best picture. It wasn't best picture. The only reason it would have won was as a token film; controversial subject matter always does well at the oscars. The movie was good, very good, but crash was just that much better. Brokeback was stale in some parts.

Crash deserved it.

I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain or Capote, but I've seen the rest and Crash is definitely the best film out of Munich and Good Night, and Good Luck.

Yes, but it was an American funded film. I mean he could have originally written it with a Canadian city in mind, depending on how old the actual screenplay really is. There's a lot of racism in Canada too. He is also from Ontario and has spent most of his life in Toronto which has a huge population and a wide variety of ethnic cultures/backgrounds and no shortage of racism either for that matter.

So I saw Crash last night.

Way better than brokeback, which was also a good movie, but not as good.
