I surely hope (for you Playstation peeps) this is pure skepticism, BUT......this is coming from Merill Lynch, which is definitely more reliable that some schmuck off the strizzeet.

How much of a hit can Sony POSSIBLY be willing to take?? Microsoft is only taking a hit of appx. 150.00 per Xbox360, according to the retail prices for all the of the 360 components.
Looks like the 700.00 price tag is looking rather possible, if this is any indication.

Go ahead.....flame me for this. Remember, don't hate the messenger.

It would be a seriously horrible business move to charge that much, so I doubt it will turn out this way.

In any case, I doubt I'll buy one. I haven't played video games regularily in a long time. I may buy a used one or something once MGS4 comes out, but I have no use for a new game system.

If ya had to guess though, Rob........how much of a loss do you think Sony's willing to take??
Just seems like anything more than a couple hundred bucks a unit would be somewhat damaging.
I wonder the retail is for the Revolution components. Especially since I keep hearing rumors of a 200.00 price tag on the unit.

There is no way that Sony will sell the PS3 for that price.

Let us hope not. However, if Sony is going to compete with Microsoft then they will have to price the PS3 at $400. Now assuming those figures are high and Sony is able to manufacture a PS3 for $700 dollars, they are still looking at a $300 dollar loss! Frankly, I sincerely doubt Sony is keen on that idea either. Therefore I suspect the PS3 will go for at least $500. Even with that $500 price tag, Sony is still taking a bigger loss than Microsoft, who has a lot more money to waste than Sony does.

Honestly, things are looking very grim as of late for Sony. There is no way they are hitting their promised Spring release date as it stands. Heck, rumour has it, all the stuff they want to put into the box doesnt even fit. Combine that in with the fact that the hard drive may no longer come with the PS3 and your looking at a system in trouble.

In the end I really hope the system does well but I think Sony might be shooting itself in the foot.

those prices are just insane. considering the cost it takes to manufacture such items is so low in comparison to what they sell them for...

corporate bastards... *shakes fisst*

I see them selling it for $500.

Yeah... but it's costing Sony 700-900 dollars to manufacture and their selling it for much less.

no i don't believe that. i don't think it honestly costs them that much to make it.

though i could be wrong. probably am wrong. i dunno. *shrug*

Even if it does cost them that much, the money maker is the games.

how can it cost $700 to MAKE it?

think logically, you can buy more computer for $1000 with how much of a markup? like 50%

The reason that the PS3 is goin to be so expensive is the blu-ray and the cell processor. The cell processor right now can only be found in high power computers and the blu-ray is not even on the market yet. So i don't believe $700 is a crazy price for the release price.

You are wrong. While the materials themselves might not cost 700 dollars to make, manufacturing them into a game console certainly does/can. Both the xbox 360 and PS3 are pushing cutting edge technology. In the case of Sony, they are pushing the new "blue ray" discs and the cell processor. The cell processor alone is an expensive item becauset it's architecture is vastly different from any chip on the market.

As far as I know, no computer uses the cell processor yet. It wasnt even finished when it was announced at E3.

When you buy a computer for $1000 you are not getting system that even comes close to what either the Xbox 360 or PS3 can do graphically. Your average $1000 Dell PC comes with a 3.0 Ghz processor a built in video card and either 512 or 1 gig of RAM.

Compare that to an xbox 360 which has THREE 3.2 GHZ processors, each running dual cores, and cutting edge video card which is comparable to a $500 video card in the PC world and you see how things add up. It's a well documented fact that Microsoft is losing money on each xbox 360 they put out. Money is made on Xbox Live and on games.

I'll still buy a PS3.

Not for 700 bucks. I can wait two years. Hell, I'm still playing Chrono Trigger and Cool Boarders 3.

hahaha, exactly. I'll wait until the prices drop on all the systems (and until I've had a chance to try the revolution), then I'll decide.
