Beginning without warning on last friday my laptop steadfastly refuses to connect to the internet through the wireless network set up in my apartment via a wireless router. everyone else's laptops are having no problem connecting. i'm able to connect to the internet via other networks, but not the one in my home. it tells me i'm connected to the network, but the ip address and subnet mask show as 0.0.0.0 and the value for the default gateway is nowhere to be seen.
if i do manage to get it to connect, windows autoconfigures a local ip that differs from that chosen by the other client computers, and if i override it manually it tells me without fail that my default gateway is offline.
this is getting very frustrating. i've even tried editing the registry to disable automatic ip addressing, with no result.
HELP ME.
I'm honestly about to have a nervous breakdown.

maybe your ip address accidently got deleted by your internet service providers. that happened to us once. my brother disconnected the modem from the computer without unplugging it first and our ip address got deleted by rogers. i'd suggest contacting your isp.

*also sends very good vibes*
*sends*
Ooh! Maybe try reseting your network connection stuff; I'd fiddle around in there a bit. It's already messed up, I doubt you could do too much more damage. But, that's just my thoughts.

someone on another forum identified it as a bug in the xp service pack 2 which, goddammit, i must have not caught one of those damn automatic updates in time

they posted a full solution for me which i am just hoping to god will fix the problem, except that it involves downloading a patch.... and as we know, i can't connect to the internet to, you know, do so

well, if it's a laptop, can't you take it to school and connect to the internet there to download the patch?

Or download it on one of your roomies' computers and either directly trasnfer it by setting up a network connection between the two (or, more easily, burn the patch on a CD or, if it's small enough, a floppy).

ok yeah so i tried that and it turns out i don't even hav sp2
then my roommate suggested that maybe the host computer downloaded some windows update that the other 2 client computers did but I did not, making me incompatible, suggesting that i should take my laptop to campus and try and update it through the internet there.
course, he tried saving the sp2 update to his jump drive and transferring it to my laptop, but NATURALLY that did not work because it couldn't be installed due to a missing file (SKL112.CAB or something) which oh look, is simply fixed by putting in the cd that i installed windows xp from, which DOESNT EXIST BECAUSE MY LAPTOP JUST CAME WITH XP.
if they find me splattered on the pavement, you will all know why.
in conclusion, fuck.

Did your laptop not come with a "boot disc" or a stystem restore disc of some sort? If it came with any CDs, it should have XP on it (for just such a problem)

call your ISP
sometimes they have firewalls up that don't send information through a subnet mask.
They will open up a gateway for you so that the router will be recognized by the modem to send information wirelessly to other devices in your home i.e. wireless ethernet card for a laptop
P.s. Have you tried power cycling your Modem and your router?!

I think you should take your laptop to where you purchased it and shove it up someone's ass.
