Has anyone seen this show? I don't know if it airs in Canada and I haven't seen it, but it has been pulled off various affiliate stations in certain US markets because of the content.

Hunh. Never even heard of it. Not surprising, though.

I'm not surprised based on what I'm hearing about the content, although most of the controversy started before it even aired so it's not like anyone gave it a chance. Wow, are there ever a lot of interesting storylines....
So what has so many people up in arms? Could it be that Daniel has an openly gay son who he (awkwardly) supports? That his adopted son is sleeping with the daughter of a rich parishioner? Maybe because his daughter is selling drugs to support her comic book venture? His wife walking around with a perpetual martini or his own frequent Vicodin popping? Would it be that the shows creator is also openly gay? No, no, it would have to be the adulterous bishops, right?
Probably all these things raise the hackles of the conservative Christian right, but what seems to top the list is Daniel's frequent conversations with Jesus, in all his hippie glory. The AFA says the show "mocks Christianity", despite the network's insistence that its intention is not to offend.

I really want to see that show now.
I thought it hadn't aired yet.

I want to see it to, just because of all the controversy! Apparently it's on Fridays at 10pm on NBC.

Did it just start recently? I'm curious to know more than what I'm reading in these articles that are making it sound so horrible. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you'd like to share.

Because making fun of Christianity is A-OK but making fun of gay people is not. Am I missing something here?

are you responding to me, or the topic in general? I don't think anyone said it was A-ok to make fun of Christianity.
If your comment was directed at me.... I don't support making fun of Christianity or homosexuality, or any other religions, rights and preferences that people may have. I merely want to see this show to make a decision for myself instead of knowing only what I read in the media.

The topic in general, sorry about any confusion. It irks me that you can get strung up and pilloried from pillar to post for making any form of derogatory comment against the gay and lesbian community but its ok for them to denigrate others, in particular the church. Take a looka t any gay rights parade and count the numbers of people in nuns habits or those dressed up as some members of the clergy. Just shits me that they can be so 2 faced at times and I'll bet pounds to peanuts that the guy who created this show would be the first to cry foul if some one insulted his religion/sexuality.

Book of Daniel doesn't insult christianity at all! It embraces it.

If the show is anything like the discription given, I wouldnt say it embraces Christianity at all.

Its about this episcopalian minister, trying to deal with his life. His eldest son is Gay, and like greiving and stuff cause his twin bro died. The daughter is a druggie. Other son is an adopted chinese dude, and he's all, ladiessss.
So basically this minister goes through his life trying to make it work, and he's always having these conversations with Jesus, about how to try to fix stuff. Jesus is in every episode.

Just because there's a Jesus figure in every episode doesn't make it embrace Christianity

I don't really think its making fun of christianity.
Its not really making fun of anything....
I mean, did Friends make fun of friendships? And even if it did, so?

I read the first paragraph of Kathy's post, and couldn't figure just what was so controversial about the show. Then I clicked the link and went.."oh...OH HE'S A PRIEST." I'd never heard of the show before, so it's hard to say, since I don't really know what spin they're taking.
Also, that actor looked so familiar that I had to look him up on imdb. Turns out he was in Benny and Joon, and I haven't seen a single other one of his movies.

Just because they're not all EXCELLENT christians doesn't mean they're not christian at all. Remember, the Lord died for our sins, not cause we were too Pure to handle.
Its like... the priest is trying to figure out how to make his life work. Jesus is his best friend, and he comes to Jesus constantly with his problems, and how he should work them out(Not unlike all Christians today..).
It isn't a Christian show, but it does show the protagonists thirst for spiritual solace with the Lord and Jesus Christ. Jesus is his BFF afterall

.
I think its intensely interesting, it has alot of examples of modern life today that many Christians struggle with, such as stuff with drugs, homosexuality, sex, etc.
The reason its off the air in some areas, no doubt, is because it has Jesus and homosexuals on the same show. And Jesus isn't damning them.

You know, 7th Heaven is about this exact subject.
Except at the end of every episode, everyone got cookies and we all learned a valuable life lesson!

7th heaven isn't REAL.
This show is much more so.
Also have you ever noticed, 7th has never ever touched the Gay Subject. I doubt they ever will.

Hell, Simon came home from college because he thought he had an STD and his dad was just like like "hey son, what's up? now stop being such a slut."
7th Heaven is le cheese, but whatev.
