Don't look at brands, look at parts.

New Powerbook is crazy small, with crazy battery life... It's like the iPod of laptops.

well, what are you planning on using it for? schoolwork? gaming? internet surfing?

apart from the usual things you're told to check (memory, disc drives, etc...)

i suggest checking weight. i did not get to chose my laptop and it's too heavy for me to tote around with me. which is fine if you're not hauling it around, but if you are, get something light enough to be manageable.

battery life is important too, because it varies significantly from laptop to laptop.

Apple ibook or powerbook.

Why? Because Apple's operating system kicks the absolute crap out of Windows and has a ton of useful features that are really useful on a laptop. Plus the system is solid to its core. It wont crash, it wont get viruses or spyware, it's fast and has a ton of cool programs and features to boot.

No it's because OS X is built on UNIX. UNIX=safe.

Windows on the other hand is a joke as far as security goes. The biggest mistake Microsoft ever made was integrating IE right into Windows. That alone, opened up more backdoors than hackers knew what to do with. And now Windows is releasing "Vista." I imagine it will be a lot more secure but goodness knows it will never be as stable or secure as a Unix built operating system. Rather than doing it right from the start like Apple, Microsoft has basically been forced to jerry rigg their code in order to make the system more secure. Rather than improving usability, Microsoft is forced to fix bug after bug and security flaw after security flaw. It's no suprise that many of Vista's "new features" have been in place on Apple OS X for quite some time.

i think the quality of your OS depends a lot on how well you maintain your computer. i have a laptop with windows xp and it works like a dream.

and our old computer at home would also have worked like a dream if it wasn't for the fact that it was 10 years old and was hence a piece of crap

Yes but the fact that you do not have to download spyware removal software, nor virus protection software says a lot. Secondly, if you put flawless copies OS X and XP side by side, OS X beats out XP in both the quality of its features and in aesthetics.

...yeah, well...

screw you guys! i wouldn't trade my xp for a billion macs!

*hugs laptop*

it should be noted here that i can't actually make a direct comparison between the two because i've never used a mac. but the point is, i'm perfectly happy with xp

lori, i got my bag at staples, but it's not exactly what you would call "cute". so, in short, i have no idea.
