I didn't see this posted anywhere else, but thought this might be of interest since everyone here loves music and some are musicians.

This already happened in 2003.

The huge problem with it, is that many artists out there actually do have the copyright to their songs, and their record labels own only the sound recordings of those songs as they're released on their CD's. So they don't have the power to demand sites to take down lyrics or tabs. Except in the case of bands where their record label does own the copyright to the music.

this is just ridiculous. online tabs have become a great way for people to teach themselves to play an instrument. i really don't think there's huge profit loss coming from this. online tab sites have enabled me to teach myself to play guitar, but i also bought music books to suppliment this knowledge. my sister uses tabs extensively, but also has a large collection of sheet music that she spends a fortune on. i don't see how it's fair, especially when not all music gets released as sheet music.

gah. this infuriates me.

this is stupid.
i taught myself to play guitar off of tabs too. ive played music. but its so much easier to look at a tab.

1) Nobody releases lyric books. You're not losing money, and the lyrics aren't some big secret anyways. Get over yourselves.

2) Very few artists release sheet music / tab books any more. If you release them, even with tabs out there, people will buy them to have official versions. If they won't buy it now, they wouldn't buy it anyways. You're not losing money, and the availability of tabs is helping to fuel the love of playing and writing music in a whole new generation of future artists for you to take advantage of and make money from. Get your head out of your ass and, once again, get the fuck over yourselves.

That's probably the stupidest thing, ever.

Besides, it is far too widespread across the internet to even ATTEMPT a total takedown. The best they could do is a few of those big tab sites that have every song ever written. Lyrics? My ass, they're everywhere.

what the.....8O

i'd like to see them TRY. this is making it illegal to share your own interpretation of a song on the internet. absolutely ridiculous. what are they going to do next, try to keep you from singing your favourite song to someone else for fear of copyright infringement? :wtf:

sure, half the time the tabs aren't really the song at all, they just think they are!

It's actually come to that. Have you ever been in a restauraunt where they sing happy birthday to someone but it's not the "traditional" happy birthday that everyone knows? The main reason they do this is because restauraunts have been sued for singing the "real" happy birthday song. Apparently they're supposed to send a check for like 3 cents to ASCAP or some nonsense every time they sing the song :freak:

That's soooo ludacris. Sooo many of the bands I know now (and have purchased CDs of) are bands that I hear my friends playing on the guitar or at coffeehouses back in highschool. This is insane. I hope the person who thought of that goes to hell.
