one time i was at the shelter (a venue in a basement of a club) watching some crappy band for free (bigwig) and i asked the dude who was playing at st. andrews (the venue upstairs) and it was pavement. i wasn't allowed to go upstairs though.
that's it.

Yeah, it's either Pavement, The Flaming Lips or Radiohead.
But fuckin Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is amazing. Good old "Range Life". Classicness...

Radiohead, Soundgarden, The Queens Of The Stone Age, The Pixies, Janes Addiction, Tool, hell even Korn And Deftones, could be considered pretty important.
The list could get a lot longer, those are just mainstream bands that come to head because they've accomplished something and had their own style, or a major effect on other copy-cat bands.

Well if you're talking major effect on copy-cats than surely Nirvana and Pearl Jam must be mentioned. Eventhough I don't particularly love either.
I just go by quality and quantity of output when comparing bands. Radiohead have the defining 90s record and one other excellent one. Pavement may be the only band with two top 10 albums of the 90s. Then you have the Lips who have, imo, the best album of the 90s and two other excellent ones.
Most other notable bands I can think of only have one classic 90s album.

our lady peace serves as a good introduction to music, but that's basically it
crooked rain, crooked rain is pavement's best effort
wowee zowee is their most interesting (and my personal favorite)

yeah i thought of adding Nirvana and Pearl Jam, they're both great artists, but i think there is also a lot of hype about them. Soundgarden was the orginator of that sound, put out more albums then Nirvana, and probably was the most technically talented.

these bands would make my list
radiohead
pavement
the flaming lips
had wilco and modest mouse released "yankee hotel foxtrot" and "the moon and antarctica" in the 90s, they'd be way up there
aeroplane over the sea was probably the third best album of the nineties
loveless was pretty fucking good too
built to spill and guided by voices were fairly consistent throughout the 90s as well
the nineties were such a fragmented period in music, though. one genre would ride out another, so i find it hard to determine the important movements.
i can't really think of anything else, i haven't slept much

i'd probably give the pixies and sonic youth some credit there too with regards to nirvana
grunge's parents

You know your stuff. Talk Talk was probably the most significant thing you missed, but other than that I agree purely.

how does Queens Of The Stone Age make the list as being a huge band of the 90's, they didnt even release and album unil 98
and still almost nobody even knew who they were unil 2002 when they put out Songs For The Deaf
