Is it mandatory to have a canadian passport if you're visiting the States for a couple of hours, or will a birth certificate be good enough??

If its not already, a passport will be required to enter the US. This goes for both Canadian and US Citizens.

You only need a birth certificate and another piece of photo I.D.

my friend got into canada with her social security card and her driver's license. but i don't think that's typical. otherwise a birth certificate will suffice.

My great aunt is 90, and she's going to Hawaii in december, and she's really worried about this. Her purse recently got stolen, so she has to get a new birth certificate from Saskatchewan, and won't be able to get a passport until she does so. So...if it's true that you'll need a passport, she's pretty screwed.

i went to the states almost a year ago, and all i had was my B.C.'s driver's license, nothing else. peace arch u.s. customs didn't seem to care too much, besides checking the luggage and stuff. when i was coming back, we were just waved through the border crossing.

I'm pretty sure she would need one anyway to fly... wouldn't she?

I know to cross the border by car you need a Valid Photo ID of residency and citizenship..Flying they prefer passports.

They prefer passsports, but a birth certificate and Valid Government Photo ID can be used. I have a passport so I use that.. My friend is Native American so they just show their nation cards and cross the border.

I think they are trying to make it madotory to have passport to cros sthe boarder. I also know that unless you are a Canadian or AMerican Citizen they want you to have a VISA also..WEhen I was coming home from Montrela last eyar they wouldn't let this guy into the States cause he didn;t have proper papers to get in. I think he was flying our of JFK to JOrdon or someplace like that. He had to take the bus back into Canada for proper ID. .

Here is an excerpt of my trip to Canda where I was crossing the border:

[Flashback]

So yea PA and NY lasted forever untill I finally hit the border. I get asked a bunch of questions by the first guy in the booth. Where are you going, Who are you seeing, when, how long etc etc. "Ok pull up to the immigration building and see someone there.

Not in the plans but being my first trip to Canada I really didn't know what to expect so I went on. The inspector/guard people were around my age and pretty cool. They asked me bascially the same quesitons but were alittle more breif. Jsut had to show proper ID at the next coutner.

Sign on the wall has a heading of "Proper ID" It list:
Drivers Licsense and Social Security card alone are not proof of citizen ship.
Goes on to list things needed like Birth certificate and voter Id card.

A bit nervous at this point but I tell the person up fron I only have my license and SS Card. "No Problem jsut need to ask ou some questions and run your ID"
I say I'm interrogated but I'm not tlaking being locked in a small room and being hit over the head with a phone book interogated. I'm sure they need to be semi-forceful with their questions to catch someone with evil intentions offguard.

Anyways it went somehting like this:
Q: Where are you going?
A: Toronto

Q: Where are you comming from?
A: Columbus, OH

Q: Whats your reason for comming here?
A: Concert

Q: What concert?
A: Our Lady Peace

Q: What time does it start?
A: Around 10

Q: Are you meeting anyone there?
A: Yea a friend

Q: Whats your friends name?
A: Lori

Q: Whats her last name
A: Umm I don't know honestly

Q: How do you know her?
A: Through the internet

As soon as I say that I'm like Oh shit I've jsut labeled myself as an internet predetor

Bit she said everything checked out with my ID and I was set to go.

In the car inspection the guards didn't really check through my stuff much. These were the same people that were my age.

The one girl was like "Nice shirt you have, those guys rock"
Told her I was seeing the concert tonight and she told me it was another hour and a half to Toronto. Some more casual chat and the standard "Your not smuggling drugs are you?" qustions and I was set to go.

Not to be racist but being an average single white guy pays off. There was 2 black couples together and an Indian family that were ahead of me in line that was having everything in their car checked. And extra guards hovering around them.

[/flashback]
