So, I need to join a bank/credit union.
WHICH DO I JOIN!? WHICH IS THE BEST.
What the hell is the difference between a bank and a credit union!
Is a credit union a more socialist choice?!?!?!
HELP ME.
*head explodes*

Question, why are you wondering which is a socialist choice?

oh jeeze. Honestly, if you're just looking for a bank to stick your money in any bank will do. Banks are better because you'll be able to find different branches in any city. Credit Unions are usually local (and the more sociallist choice since many were started because of unions), but if you're just sticking many in the bank it's better to go with a place you have easy access to, and that offers you the best deal as a student in terms of fees and whatnot.

[edit: that was to Sine, not to you, Jim]
Anyways, what kind of acount do you want? Are you looking to save money, or are you going to use your acount for spending?
You should decide on the type of acount, and from there choose which institution will give you a better deal for the acount type you need. Don't limit yourself to whatever you consider to be more "socialist". Also, don't just look at the base monthly fees and go for the lowest - watch for things like "withdrawl fees" (if you get an acount with a low monthly fee, but limited withdrawls, you could kill yourself on fees for each withdrawl over your limit).
And, once you've chosen an acount type, don't fret about it too much. You can always change if you find you need something different.

I was joking! About the socialist and everything thing!
Well, kinda.
Anyways it needs to be a chequing AND savings account. Close to my house are an Island Savings Credit Union, Royal Bank, Canadian Western Bank, CIBC, and HSBC.
My mummy says to go with TD, but i'm not sure. I looked on all their websites and it confuses me greatly.
Basically I want it to like.. cash paycheques[or get direct deposit], but also to put my own money into it, to interact/take cash out at a machine often, and not have too many of those user fees. So.. Yeah.

I'd go TD if I were you then, or CIBC. Basically you just go there and tell them what you need and they'll find you the best plan possible.

my bank has been royal bank for many a year now, and i've never had any reason to complain about any of their services. i've got a student plan, and i get 25 free card swipes a month, free online banking, and a fee of $3.25 a month.

I have a presidents choice account and its the greatest thing ever. You don't pay for anything. Period. Ever. They use CIBC bank machines and their internet banking is the easiest thing I've ever seen. I used to be at TD but I switched over because they kept charging for stupid things and had a swipe limit and all that jazz. Now presidents choice is the best.

i belong to a credit union. i just joined because the people at my old bank were assholes, and the credit union was closer to me. i really don't know the difference between the two.
