Belinda Stronach Sees The Light : Sinead Ecstatic

This definetly deserves a thread. A high profile conservative MP has jumped ship to the Liberals. Probably, but not definetly, saving the Liberals from a failed budget and a non confidence vote.
Now, my question to you, the audience[And I the giddy ecstatic host] Do you think she just did this for a seat in a Cabinet? Do you think she changed over because she really and truly doesn't agree with/like the way Harper and the Crazyheads are going, with their alliance to the Bloc, etc? Or do you think, she's just, an incredibly smart cookie!
I'll go with, a little bit of selling out, a lot of smart cookie. She's my new political hero.

I'm tickled pink.
Hee hee, Stephen Harper must be FURIOUS.
Oh, How sweet it is. Although she's probably going to be facing ALOT of criticism, the love will flow to her.
Anyways,
DISCUSS.

She wanted a nice seat in cabinet. She wants to be PM eventually and I think she figured out that the only way that will happen is by jumping to the liberals. She was always one of the most liberal conservatives, so it doesn't surprise me she would jump over, but I don't think there was any motive other than to further her political career. If she believed in Gomery then she wouldn't have voted in favour of pushing an election 8 seperate times in caucus.

She was a very liberal conservative, she supported Gay Marriage and such. Maybe the conservatives were just a better doorway for her. She isn't radical enough to be the leader of the Conservatives, the Liberals however..

<-- That is some weak sauce.
I would be embarassed to be from a riding they represent.

ya that is pretty pathetic, but what can you do?
As for Belinda never being able to be the Conservative leader, I have to highly disagree. Agendas change rapidly, and soon enough if the conservatives really wanted to be in power they would probably have to shift more centrist. Aside from the sponsorship scandal, there is no reason why the Liberals wouldn't win an election, or any future election. The only reason the conservatives are so close is because of the scandal, and I think they'd need to shift to get power. Belinda could have been the person needed to achieve that shift.
I guess now it doesn't matter though. I have a feeling she could very well be our next female PM. She's only in her late 30's, and I would think she has the charisma, intelligence, and leadership qualities to run the country, not to mention she's a pretty face that people like to look at. You need a leader who is appealing to the public and Belinda is definitely that.
I think the funniest/saddest thing is seeing the interviews with Mackay. He is so distraught over these events. It's practically a soap opera.

I'm from Marice Vellacott's riding and I'm not embarassed. While his comment might not of been tasteful, it certainly wasn't as bad as the rest. He didn't "pretty much call her a prostitute." He alluded to an act of
political prostitute. The first implies she's a slut. The second implies that she's selling her vote to the highest bidder, in a sense.

I feel a teensy bit sorry for him. But then I remember that he's all chummy with Stephen Harper and my empathy flows away.
I've got to disagree, and say she couldn't ever be the leader of the conservatives. She's too moderate, and they too radical. Not to mention the part where she's a woman and alot of them probably would rather have her baking pies in a kitchen than leading a country.
For the liberals, She could be the next leader. I'd love to have her as my PM, she's everything you said she was Jim, I think she'd be a phenominal leader.

But the conservatives (much like every party) have morphed to go along with the times. Simply because a party stands for something one decade doesn't mean it'll still be the same the next.

There still is a definite air of sexism in the party.

I don't think it's 'seeing the light' as it is seeing an opportunity. The conservatives were a great vehicle, and she can advance further with the liberals. There isn't a doubt in my mind that she has her eyes on Martin's seat. Though, I'm one of those people that doesn't want a spring election so I'm relieved that her crossing the floor allowed the Liberals to see another day in power.

Like the Liberals and their stance on same-sex marriages right now. In the early 90's they specifically said that they were not in favour of it.

exactly. Parties change with the times and will do whatever it takes to gain power. They'll change to make people like them.

I meant seeing the light in the sense that the conservatives are evil, and she's ditched them.
It was meant as a joke.

In order for someone to make a good PM, they have to be a good leader. That means leading a party forward, not just jumping ship to be with whoever's winning. I'd have respect for her if she had honestly took charge of the conservatives, (or at least been part of the team) and lead them into a positive future for the party. And her just automatically getting a cabinet seat is a farce, and shows no respect for the constituants. Basically it's a game of Stronach and Martin going "no, no, you're cooler. no you are!"

Yannic does have a point. She shows she has no loyalty, whats to say she wont do it to the liberals? Mind you.. Politics is all about winning really, for the MP's. It isnt about friendship and loyalty.
