Bleeding Hearts and Nosey Parkers!

Recent events around the globe involving Australia in some ways have sparked quite some vocal discussion in my wonderful nation. The 2 that have generated thought in this thread are "the Bali 9" and the upgrading of the road to Anzac Cove in Turkey in prepartion for Anzac Day. I'll give ytou some background information on each situation before you make your own judgement on what is going on.

Situation 1: The Bali 9

A few months ago, a Gold Coast beauty student by the name of Schapelle Corby was caught on her way through Bali customs with 4.5kg of marijuana in her bag. Schapelle has protested her innocence, claiming she was framed and never knew the dugs were in her bag. This received a lot of media attention and she faces life in jail in Bali for trafficking. Skip forward about 6-8 weeks. 9 more Australian's are arrested in Bali in connection with 4.5kg of heroin being imported here. 4 mules were caught with the drugs strapped to their body and 5 more were arrested at tehir hotel in connection with the trafficking. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) tipped off the Indonesian police and as such they were arrested.

A number of bleeding hearts in the general public is in uproar that we let these drug running Australians to be arrested in INdonesia where they are now facing the death penalty. Many in my dear country feel that this was barbaric and are lambasting the AFP and the Indonesians for allowing those felons to face justice in Indonesai rather than in the cushy comforts of home. They feel we should have let them come home before arresting them. Why are these bleeding hearts coming out in support of the criminals here? Why are we bashing the police for doing their job correctly? To you bleeding hearts in the civil liberties groups, in the gneral public and to those who feel you must trash the cops for doing their job. GO BACK TO YOUR HOLE AND SHUT UP! They knew what they were doing is wrong. It's patently obvious that drug running is wrong and its even sign posted in Indonesia that you do face execution should you be caught.

Situation 2: Anzac Cove, Turkey

Back in WW1, the Allied forces devised a plan to strike at Germany from behind and take Turkey out of the war. Thus an offensive front was opened up around the Dardanelles. THis offensive comprised primarily of Australian and NZ troops with British naval support. British bungling however set the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) on the wrong beach and instead of light defense they were met with withering gunfire from the clifftops. They spent 2 years on this cove trying to break through the Turkish lines and failed. The heroism of the young Anzacs at Gallipoli was recognised with a national public holiday called Anzac Day which occurs every year on April 25. Turkey was nice enough to mark the place with a national park and war memorial. Each year hundreds of Australians travel to Gallipoli, Turkey to celebrate Anzac day and to pay their respects to the fallen. Recently the road to the war memorial was upgraded to accomodate the new generation of tour buses and to make the place safer. The road was falling apart and in everyones opinion needed work. Now road contruction in a hillside cannot be completed without at least some excavation work. But the bleeding hearts again have poked their noses where they don't belong and blasted the Turkish Gaovernment for it's callousness in roac excavation because some remains were disturbed, (Imagine a road being constructed in a battlefield slaughter where so many died might disturb something) They blast the Australian government for not stopping the road works.

Why is my country full of vocalists who must criticse the people who are improving the way of life for many people be it in keeping drugs off the street or in making a war memorial safer. DIE! GO BACK TO YOUR HOLES AND NEVER COME OUT!

Thank you for your time. :)

DIE! GO BACK TO YOUR HOLES AND NEVER COME OUT!

Oooh, constructive.

I agree that what these people[the drug runners] are doing is wrong, very illegal, and they know it. And for commiting such a crime should face the penalties that specific country lays down. However, alot of the prison situations in SE Asian countries are inhumane, overcrowded and torture can go on.

So really, the "Bleeding Hearts" as you put them, shouldn't only be crying out for their own countries criminals trapped in an unfair prison system, but EVERYONE trapped in such a system.

That being said, I guess you cannot understand the lengths of compassion some people have for others who have made mistakes in their past.

Fair enough, but what about for the quality of life for human beings?

Ok. Situation #1. I don't agree with. What if that girl was actually framed? DEATH!? That seems a wee bit...much.

Situation #2. Totally agree with you.

Normally I don't agree with bleeding hearts that much, especially tree hugging ones. But I suppose my heart has been a bit leaky lately. What if that was your sister or your brother who perhaps made one mistake? Would you want them to die for it? Personally, I'd rather have them spend some time in prison or something to learn their lesson.

In situation 1 I actually sympathise with Schapelle. But she is not at the heart of this. It's those who deem that the Australian's should have been arrested on Australian soil rather than tipping off the Indonesians.

There is a possibility she could have been framed. Look at Bridget Jones' Diary 2!

I font think framed is the right word here. Simply that her bags were used as a means of transport. No one was trying to set her up. It just happened ot be her shit that was used

in the first scenario, I don't think much can be said. There's laws. People should follow them. If they don't, they get punished. Simple as that.

I think no matter where you are you get people who get in an uproar over progress (i'm talking about scenario 2 here). In my home town a new city hall is just opening this month. Personally, I think it is a fantastic building as it will improve the downtown core, be a new space for the city library, and help incorporate the old Welland Canal into the downtown landscape. Over the past five years selections of the population are greatly against the building simply because it came out of the txpayers money. Even though this building improves the downtown, people still find reason to complain.

Yeah, but that building wasn't disrupting anyone's grave.

Not saying that road shouldn't have been built or whatever cos of the graves... just saying people being stingy with money is a lot different from people being upset cos a burial site's being distrupted.

That first scenario reminds me of that Claire Daines movie.. what was it... "Broken Down Palace" I think?

You're right. I overlooked the fact there were graves there.

part one, i agree, that's their laws and you should know better to show up with drugs. if she was framed, then it makes me believe that she should have kept her bags with her all the time.

part two, yeah, i dunno. i mean one would expect to find artifacts from the battle so my guess would be it should have been excavated properly and then construction should have commenced.

It was a battlefield. Of course there are going to be dead bodies. Just look at France and Germany. But there was already a road there. No matter hwat things would have had to have been disturbed in the upgrade.

i suppose. they should do routine maintenence on it to protect from having to completely overhaul this road again.

What I find strange is that they had 4.5kg of pot in their bags. Isn't that quite a bit? Could that fit into a normal bag? Wouldn't you like, feel it? That's the equivillent of a small dog, if not more. Kind of weird.

Oh, I saw a bit about this on CNN. The drug one I mean.
I remember the woman saying "I've already served 7 monthes in prision which is punishment enough for not putting locks on my bags." or something similar. I've gotta believe that she is innocent until proven guilty. She seemed very sincere.
