He was required by law to join Hitler's Youth.

yahoo news wrote: Ratzinger turned 78 on Saturday. His age clearly was a factor among cardinals who favored a "transitional" pope who could skillfully lead the church as it absorbs John Paul II's legacy, rather than a younger cardinal who could wind up with another long pontificate.

This is the funniest thing. Basically he was picked because they wanted a pope who would die soon and not leave a legacy. I just found that hilarious.
yahoo news again wrote:Some have questioned whether the new pope betrayed any pro-Nazi sentiment during his teenage years in Germany during World War II.

In his memoirs, he wrote of being enrolled in Hitler's Nazi youth movement against his will when he was 14 in 1941, when membership was compulsory. He says he was soon let out because of his studies for the priesthood.

Two years later, he was drafted into a Nazi anti-aircraft unit as a helper, a common fate for teenage boys too young to be soldiers. Enrolled as a soldier at 18, in the last months of the war, he barely finished basic training.

so there ya go Korzic...[/quote]

He seems okay. I'll see soon enough. I was horrified at the hitler youth thing to begin with, but then, it was a law thing and if you didnt you got killed. So.

I think it's lame how they elect a pope based on his age. You'd think that they'd want someone to stick around as long as they can.

But this guy sounds like a good choice. He was supposedly really close to John Paul...so here's to hoping he'll be able to fill his shoes.

To the contrary, I heard that they don't want a really long papacy like the last one.

They don't. They're choosing him as a filler pope, he's not long dead, so in the meantime they can take a long time and choose the pope that will succeed him.

He's got bloody big shoes to fill.

I honestly can't see them chosing a pope because they are hoping he'll die soon. Thats a little sick minded, don't you think? I mean his age was probably a factor in that he holds traditional values but I cannot believe that the cardinals honestly just wanted him so that they could have a longer time to choose the next one. I don't even care much about the pope and his doings but did the media really need to put that sort of a spin on things?

I can't understand how they can elect a pope who's (most likely) killed people. Also, if you do some digging you can find various sources that say it wasn't compulsary to join the Hitler Youth. But since it's such a hot topic it's hard to tell which one is the truth. Either way, this will have huge reverberations for everyone around the world. He's also apparantly even more right wing than PJPII on issues such as birth control and condoms. Seems like a pretty crappy choice to me, but we shall see. :uh:
