If I put a "blonde" or lighter coloured dye on top of my darker brown hair, will it lighten it up even just a little bit? My friend told me this was true but I don't believe him.
Any knowledge you can share w/me?
Thanks

hmm ok. My dreadlocks also sucked the dye in like, hardcore..
I dyed it "medium-light reddish brown"
and it turned out like burgandy chocolate color.. really really dark LOL
Thanks.

i had a friend with purple hair who tried to bleach it out and the dye only took to the bits of her hair that weren't purple, so she ended up with purple hair with bright gold roots and random strands

i've been semi-forced into putting blond hair dye into my dark brown hair, and it showed up a lot more than i wanted it too.

It doesn't really work well to put blonde dye in over top of dark dye. I hate to say this, but I think you're stuck with the dark.
Let's see a picture, I think you'd probably look good with dark hair from the pictures I've seen.

well it doesnt look bad, just darker than i expected, i guess.
its just that i already bought two other colors to put on top of what was supposed to be a lighter brown. One was a light, but very f'in bright orange color, the other was this burgandy ish color
but i mean i can put them over the dark, still, but they'll just be really subtle
I'll probably just return them and stay with the dark brown
I'm at work right now so i'll take a picture when i get home tonight. Someone told me today that the color matches my eye color so maybe just look at my eye color in my profile picture + a few shades darker = that color
There's always bleach... but i dont want to mess with this too much - my poor delicate dreadies

I have to be careful.

As far as dying your hair goes, here are a couple of things I know.
If you have bleach in your hair (even if its for another color, like if you died your hair blue they might bleach it first to make a stronger more perminant color) then dye you buy at the drugstore won't color your hair. Its not fun, but its true.
But since you don't have that problem lets move on.
The name of the dye doesn't really mean much. You wouldn't want to paint your room based on the name of the paint so why would you want to do the same with your hair? If your buying dye from a drugstore then go by the color of the hair on the box. Your current color will influence it a bit, and keep that in mind. Dyes will change the color of your hair to that specific color, so if you want it 'lightened' or if you want highlights or something then you will probably want a couple of colors and I'd leave that to the professionals because you probably won't be satisified with what you do to yourself. Its much better if you know the exact color that you want your hair if you plan on doing it at home.
If I were you then I would choose a light brown color. Now that I think about it, I'm not entirely sure what you expected to get out of a 'reddish brown' color because that says to me it will be like a dark brown with a light red tinge. Anyway. Thats my advice.

The color on the box was insanely lighter than what my hair turned out to be, (the only reason why i was like wtf?) lol and before i dyed it the other night, my hair was this light orange/brown/blonde ish color. My natural hair color is medium brown, i had bleached it, then dyed it orangeish, and it has been left to fade for a few months, then i dyed it the other night. It was lighter than the color on the box, but i mean its like almost "natural" black now (not blue black) if im not in the sun or moderately bright light...
Thanks for the advice though, i think i should just leave it alone for now and see if it fades very quickly etc
Thankya

I really wouldn't bleach your dreads... I can't imagine all the bleach would wash out very well, and you could destroy them.
Just give yourself a little more time to get used to the color, and I bet you'll love it. Especially if it matches your eyes. That's always a cool look.

I've been dying my hair purple for close to two years now, and I can't get it to stay. Last time I dyed it it only stayed in for a few days.
I bleached it months ago to make the purple brighter/stay longer, so now I have blonde streaks.

I don't know what colour to dye my hair. I put this reddish colour in but now the dark brown roots are showing (it's not a huge disparity or anything, but I still want to redye it). I don't know whether to go lighter or darker
