Wow, how long did it take you to get semi-good just learning by yourself? I'm talking, good enough to play for a band or just a song?

30 minutes? You're lucky. OK, what you should do then is print out tabs of songs that you like. Your best bet would be to start off on a Blink-182 song. If not, playing Hit Or Miss by New Found Glory is pretty easy too. The key is to play songs that are easy to learn and that you like. Maybe that is why I like playing the guitar and bass so much, the fact that I find myself playing songs that I love all the time just keeps me interested. But after that, with anything else I do, I can't keep myself entertained. So, what you could do is find an easy OLP song or something, work on that piece by piece, and before you know it, you'll know how to play an OLP song, then you will not want to put your guitar down.

I have no idea if you were talking to me or Jonathan, so I will answer for myself. Well, here's my stupid story. I started plucking around on my girlfriend's guitar in November, which is cool. I couldn't play shit then. When I finally came to terms with the fact that I need to play to get better, I played in her dorm room every weekday from January until today so far for something like two hours a day. I would just bring over my own tabs and I would keep working at it until I could play the songs.

I wouldn't say I am a good enough guitarist to front a band or anything, but I can hold my own when it comes to songs I know. I am not spectacular by any means, but yeah, I get over it and I am still working on it.

So yeah, it took me about 2 months before I could actually play anything, then after that, everything was a snowball effect for me. For some reason the rhythms to songs come really easily to me. People told me they hate me because I can pick up rhythm. Now that I can play the chords, I could be a good guitarist in time. It's nice and all that I can play songs, but I really am a bassist, so I will stick with that and be happy.

It took a while. Learning guitar is tough.
After about 19 months I was considered to be an intermediate player. I still had little trouble switching between new chords that i had learned, as for Barre Chords, slowly but surely, I was gradually able to switch between chords to Barre Chords faster and faster.
As for speed and dexterity, that took a while for me to develop my hands, but once again, slowly but surely, I noticed that I could play faster.
As of today, I think that I'm a pretty good guitar player. Its one of the few things in life that I do well.
As for the knowing enough to play a song. If you mean a simple acoustical song, with the Simple 8 Basic Chords, it took me a lttle over a year. I didnt know any songs though. I was able to swtich between the 8 chords rather well. I didnt learn my first song till 97' The very first song that I learned to play was Clumsy :) All my myself and I sounded good :)
And it felt good. :)
To answer your question after about 4 years I was comfortable enough and good enough to play in front of my friends and If neccessary a band.

Heres some advice:
Learn these chords:--A,Am, D,Dmin, E,Emin, G and C
Lots of songs were written using these chords.

and

when tryling to learn a song. First of all, Do an intense search for accuarate Tabs(Tabcrawler.com or MxTabs.net are the best places) Then learn the chords and know them by heart. Once you do that, play along with the song, and slowly you will be able to play it.

Good Luck

Ya, that's what I did, got a crappy acoustic and started taking lessons just so i could learn. the only problem is that my guitar is kinda creepy and has a mullet (and not some half-ass thing either) I would probably practice a lot more if he had ever heard of any band other than Black Sabbath. I told him I wanted to play something a little newer, so he brought out the Avril Lavigne...GOD GOD, MAN!!!!

and G7 and D7 could come in handy... the first chord progression I learned was G, Em, Am, D7.... I think it was Em first... I always get those two mixed up...
