nikki4982 wrote:Alright. These cookies get devoured whenever I make them. The recipe comes from my mommom.

WARNING: They're addictive and you might end up eating the whole batch yourself. (You think I'm joking, but it's true. At Christmas, my uncle kept eating them and was yelling at himself that he had to stop. And my cousin who NEVER eats dessert ate a bunch.)

Molasses Sugar Cookies

¾ cup shortening
1 cup sugar
¼ cup molasses
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon cloves
½ teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt

Melt shortening in 3 or 4 quart saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat, let cool. Add sugar, molasses and egg; beat well. Sift together flour, soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon and salt; add to first mixture. Mix well; chill. Form in 1 inch balls, roll in granulated sugar and place on greased cookie sheets 2 inches apart. Bake in moderately hot oven 375°F for 8-10 minutes.

Note from Nikki: I always cook them for 8 minutes. They turn out soft and wonderful that way. I also use salted butter rather than shortening.

I'm glad I didn't count how many I ate last night. And I can't even explain how excited I am to take some to work today :D

I told hubby you said they were addictive, and he said it wouldn't affect him cuz they weren't that good. When I went to brush my teeth last night before bed I caught him sneaking out to the kitchen for one last cookie!

I want to make them too.

I just have to work out what exactly molasses means in the context of that recipe and then convert the stuff.

Maybe tomorrow if I have any molasses, but I'm not sure I have anything molasses-like.

Damnit! This morning I tried to bake something because this thread made me want to. First I started to make the wrong cookies. than I didn't have the stuff to make the cookies I wanted. Than I made normal cookies and they burned even though I was trying to undercook them!!!!

I don't get along with cookies anymore.

Oh no :( Poor Sarah.

So it seems molasses is just treacle like I thought. But I don't have any :(

wikipedia does say this:

Molasses is a common ingredient in baking, often used in baked goods such as gingerbread cookies. In such recipes, it is possible to replace each cup of molasses with one of the following:

1 cup honey
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 cup dark corn syrup
1 cup pure maple syrup

but I'm not convinced all those will work due to different consistencies.

I also found out that apparently you don't have golden syrup in north America. Which is just crazeeeee.

We have it where I live, it's just hard to find and not very commonly used.

My soup recipe:

couple carrots
several stalks of celery
couple onions
couple potatoes
half a bunch of cilantro
some beef bones/stewing meat
couple tomtatoes

Throw everything in a big pot with enough water to cover vegetables/meat. Throw in a dash of olive oil, some pepper, oregano, salt, paprika, oregano, and any other spices you like. Boil, then simmer for a few hours. Then you got some good soup!

I've been meaning to make myself some homemade vegetable soup like that for ages (clearly I'd take out the meat). Someday I'll get all the junk to do it!

Also, Soozy, I don't think replacing the molassas with any of those would work very well in this recipe, sadly. It's too much of an important ingredient. T... tr... *copies and pastes the word*... treacle shouldn't be too expensive, though... is it? I think it's only a few bucks for a jar here.

Oh no, it's not a problem to get. It just involves going out in the cold and wet and I forgot to look for some at lunchtime.
