Meredith was originally a man's name too. And yes, Shirley was also- there's a famous Washington Post columnist, who is a man, named Shirley Povich.

I grew up with a kid named Cassidy in my class, that everyone called Cass. It wasn't even til high school that I realized that Cass could be a girl's name.
