Yeah you might want to try backing up everything you've got and just reinstall the os.

 Yes, it can take a while to scan your harddrives for viruses. Norton shouldn't have been all that much quicker, really.

They're probably not "gone". The shortcuts probably just don't point to the right spot or something. Go to Start --> Run and type in "notepad"... does it come up? If so, it's just the shortcut that's messed up.

Regardless, it wouldn't be a bad idea to back up all your files, format then reinstall everything.

this is the problem i'm having, i get on the internet and my home page is about:blank. then a pop-up tells me i have spy ware and to click there for information on how to get rid of it. it leads to a web site selling shit like ad-scanners and shit like that.

so i go to internet options and make my homepage back to yahoo and after a while it will do the same thing again.

ive ran ad-aware and it took off a bunch of files.

the hells wrong with my computer?

Ad-aware's not getting rid of the program causing that to happen. Try getting Spybot and running that. If that doesn't work, try getting Bazooka, so at least you'll know what's causing it.

You have what I had on my pc. It's called CoolWWWSearch. It basically hijacks your home page and search page settings. Go to www.majorgeeks.com , go to spyware utilities on the left hand column, then download a program called CWS shredder. Close out all your browser windows and run the utility. It will restore all your settings and get rid of the evilness.

Also using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer has helped me out so much. I only scan for spy ware every couple of weeks now, and since I've stopped using IE I get maybe 4 files of spyware is all, where as before it was always 20+. Not to mention Firefox is cooler in every aspect.

Yeah I'm using firefox now too. But I want IE to be my default browser because it doesn't do some things. But now I can't get it back to my default. Do you know?

Try uninstalling your virus scanner. It miraculously worked for me a while ago. Reinstalling Windows also works, don't forget to back up your files.
