Well they generally don't go into the opinion in history books. Anf if they said he was an Atheist they'd have to reveal the religion of everyone else in the book. Which would probably take up alot of time, and wind up being useless.

canada won the war of 1812 in the sense that we likely wouldn't have been a country if it hadn't happened. fighting for their homes and families, together, side by side, gave the english and french peoples of upper and lower canada a feeling of respect and kinship that helped them get past their differences and form a sort of national identity that led to confederation.
the united states didn't manage to win that 14th colony, and britain didn't manage to win back the united states, but i consider it a victory for canada. not upper and lower canada, or english and french canada, but one, united canada.
and how do people not think they lost in vietnam? did they miss that whole incident where everyone just barely escaped the rooftop of the embassy in a helicopter while hordes of angry rioters descended on the building? or did they think that was a tv movie?
here's my fact: for centuries, islam had the most progressive policy towards women anywhere in the world. when britain was writing laws giving women's more equal rights during the 1800's, most were taken directly from islamic doctrine. the current problems in islamic countries are caused more by a corruption and misuse of the religion's intentions than by an actual disparity between the rights of the sexes.

the same could be said about the US role in the war. Toward the end of the war, the US was winning battles all over the country and if it were to continue, the war might have spilled onto the modern day canada. naval battles were easily won by US ships, ships that were fighting against a supposed super power with a long history of naval dominance. Jackson killed british troops in New Orleans with native americans, militiamen and other rag tag groups of people, not a legitimate army. surely if the war kept going on, this would have complely turned the tide and the british would have been run into the sea.
