How come frank didn't save Donny the second time? Is it because Donnie strayed away from his god given path and killed him? But that doesn't explain the theatre scene. Any thoughts?

Frank didn't save donnie the second time because donnie wasn't on his meds.

Frank didn't save Donnie the second time because Donnie had made the choice to die in order to save the girl he loved from dying. He couldn't go through everything again and save her, because that is what happens on his path if he is saved by Frank. However, he was given the opportunity to go back in time and die in his room (because the wormhole opened).

His meds were actually what was preventing him from seeing Frank. Remember, he stopped taking them. His "disorder" is what gave him the ability to see Frank, the wormhole, etc.

His meds were actually placebos... that was explained later in the film.

Well, either way, a placebo works the same as real medication. And no matter what he was taking it was his "condition" or "disorder" that allowed him to see Frank.

Finally checked out this movie last week and I like it a lot.. good stuff!~

I watched The Butterfly Effect right before I watched Donnie Darko too, interesting flick also.
